Title: Anybody done this?????
Post by: bodgeandlegit on 09 May 2009, 20:55
I`m going to take a front door panel out of my mk3 tomorrow to see if I can "graft" in a bigger speaker behind the grill, screw it straight into the metal if there`s room, and try (somehow!!) to make the door into a better speaker enclosure. I do think that the arrangement/position of the original speaker is total crap  , no matter what is put in there it still sounds like a speaker running in free air. Anybody attempted to do a similar project and was it worth it??

I`m fed up with harsh/tinny sound, I don`t want a sub (or 6 x 9`s), so this seems like the only option to try

Many thanks!!!

probaly possible mate, havnt heard of anyone trying this before, sure it would be less hassle though to put a sub in your car, no car speakers will match up to having a sub in your car. deosnt have to be stupidly big or loud. I habe a single JBL 1200watt sub running which just takes the bass away from the speakers which allow thems to give much clearer sound.

As above you can't go wrong with a sub! You can also fit competition speaker pod's which will stop the cheapo tinny sound and all the rattle's! I'm in the process of deciding on what speaker set up to put in mine and had plenty advice from people that have done it before.

Two things here!

1. You will NOT be able to fix a speaker to the door metal! For two reasons! First the shape of the hole around that area is designed to get the window motor out, so is not suitable to position. And second the speaker will be too far back and interfere with the window glass.

2. Do what I did and fit the SPL Dynamics 170mm speakers in the doors! They are as good as subs!
Or look at Focal subs in the doors but you will have to amp them!

I know I took the door panel off yesterday to have a look, and I don`t very often admit defeat but it`s impossible!! Did the SPL`s do the trick then?? That would be the ideal solution for me. I really don`t want a sub in the boot as I carry my mountain bike about a lot and a sub box would be a pain in the backside!!
