Title: i did search!(engine swapies)

i have a 1.8 gl its a post 90.
if your just swap the engine and not the box.
do you have to swap the fuel tank and the lines?
then it just a plug and play kinda thing?
also the the exhaust manifold the same?
what engines can this be done with 8v gti, 16v gti, 2.0 8v, 2.0 16v and so on!

Post by: rubjonny on 06 May 2009, 15:19: all the engines you listed will bolt into a MK2, plus a few more as well.
The fuel tank is the same on carb and injection models, just need to fit the in-tank and under car pumps plus matching fuel lines. 8v GTI manifold is the same bolt pattern as the carby, but the GTI one is a better design. You could fit the carby one to a GTI head but I'd go with a GTI setup. If you wanted to stick with a 1.8 8v GTI all you need is the head, the bottom end is the same as a 1.8 carby one. Still need the rest of the injection gubbins of course. 2.0 8v either fit the rest of the 2.0 8v injection stuff, or fit a 1.8 8v GTI head to the bottom end and fit MK2 digi GTI stuff.

16v requires a different zuast manifold, you could fit an 8v GTI downpipe to the manifold and fit it to your old zaust, but from the factory the 16v had a bigger bore on it so I'd go with a proper 16v one. 2.0 and 1.8 16v require the same ammount of work to fit, so go for a 2.0 if you can afford the insurance!

Post by: rubjonny on 07 May 2009, 10:58: 1.8 8v with the dizzy on it will work with a MK2 1.8 8v GTI head, can either run it on carbs or fit all the injection gubbins. as danny says the 2.0 16v is a very good swap, and is pretty much the same ammount of work to fit as it would be to convert yours to run 1.8 8v injection, excepot you would also need to swap the entire engine lump obv ;)

engine fitting is bolt up, pumps just bolt up. the wireing is also very straight forward. when doing it you'll think the engine is wanting to jump in the bay and nest there almost by itself

I've done quirte a number of these over 2day weekends now. It really is quite easy once you've sussed it.

Post by: rubjonny on 11 May 2009, 08:49: you can do it with box in but I'd imagine it is a bit of a ball ache, specially since box removal just means shafts off, 1 bolt to mount and a couple cables/plugs to be removed. Also you prob would want a better ratio box to fit anyway :)

Its much easier using the original MK2 box but if you've got the patience then I'd defo go with the MK3 one. Although I'm now looking into whether I can get a 6spd box from the Ibiza/Leon to fit up to it :evil:

No mate, it stays as a MK2, just increased Engine capacity from 1.8 to 2.0 16V

did try to google it and search on here best i got is: new dizzie, loom, fuel pump,fuel rail,fuel lines, inlet manifold and any thing else?!
