Title: Downsizing
Post by: No Golf Clubs at all on 04 May 2009, 17:11
Things are getting dodgy at work, looks like I'll be out of a job before September :-(

Contemplating downsizing for something smaller and markedly cheaper to run on a monthly basis.

Half toying with the idea of swapping out for a toyota iq2. Not sure if that's my iq score or if it a good idea. I currently spend about £150 on petrol a month and have all the usual 4th year costs to look toward to, so with road tax at current levels and an not due in September will have about £1k to shell out.

That wee car is maybe crap I've still to check it out but the same principles apply, low monthly outgoings, no maintenance, lower insurance and no road tax. Seeing it as a temp measure until things get back on track.

Any opinions? My car is fantastic, I love her but she's an expense maybe too far when I'm out of work.

You can get some great little cars for not a lot of money.  I'd suggests something a few years old then you will lose very little in terms of depreciation.  If you fancy a slightly bigger car (mondeo/vectra) then diesels, with lots of mpg and lots of toys cost nothing a few years old.

Know how you feel mate... things are pretty crp everywhere. Have thought about downgrading myself, and its slightly harder to do than it sounds but remember its better to see these things in advance and adjust your lifestyle accordingly rather than get caught out and desparate.

Sorry to hear mate and I hope you manage to keep your job.

Yeah true, just kind of like new and no hassles. Still at the drawing board stage. May try to sell mine privately to increase my options. Probably too big a leap(back) to go for a micro car. Bet if I do I'll get a cracking job but have to commute to Edinburgh which may well demand a bigger car LOL

Oh well. Like my company is doing, perhaps I'm not "downsizing" more "right sizing".   from 6 project managers to 1! The barstewards

Sorry to hear about your plight mate and wish you all the best in keeping your job

I have just sold my GTi but my other (wife's) car is a Toyota Aygo Black. Bigger than the iQ and has a boot as well. I've just been down to London from Newcastle to watch Spurs and the comfort and motorway cruising was fine. Almost 70 mpg to boot on a run from a 3 cylinder petrol engine and I find it quite funky to look at and use it daily as a local run about.

There are some good deals to be had at the moment - my mates just bought a new (old shape) Vectra diesel for £9995 - more comfortable but you've got to look at yourself in the mirror in the morning :embarassed: Cheal but residuals are still falling like a stone every day.

The Aygo was the best (least) depreciating car last year

How about a polo? I had a 1.2 VW polo before I got the Golf and spent hardly anything on petrol (compared to the Gti anyways!!).

But I don't use my car for commuting fortunately.

How about a Smart Brabus Coupe? I think they're very cool and they must be pretty cheap to run/buy?

thanks all, won't bore y'all the gory details of a cynical 'wipe the competition out' type corporate take over, suffice it to say the only thing I'll have is an income for now. Total devastation with no consideration of a wider societal impact.

Anyway, mark! yep she is still running like a dream, replaced 4 tyres with asymmetrics and the handling improved like you would not believe. Pescaras were a great alternative to monzas as I couldn't get a good cheap genuine set anywhere.

So bring on the dsg service, 4th year main service, cam belt, water pump and fuel pump changes that are due ........ Eeeek! Worse than a 996 and less mpg! But, I love it

....

Excellent news! I felt for you for thinking you might have to lose your Ed30.

I would have suggested something like a new Fiat 500 Abarth or a previously used Lupo GTI.

errr  snot an ed30. Same as yourself Red, minus all/most the expensive wonderfulness. Just the pescaras... Only got them since I couldn't find genuine monzas at the right price.

Gonna bite the bullet and do the works on her asap. Only 35k miles but just want these expenses out of the way whilst I still have a decent salary. Biggest shower of barstewards outside of the stealer network these new employers, would love to tell all but this is so not the place. :lipsrsealed:
