Title: steering
Post by: maxie on 04 May 2009, 14:24
hi all..... i've recently bought a golf gti 06 plate, but was unable to test drive it myself as im a tetraplegic and the car had no hand controls, so a friend drove it for me :(... now i have had the adaptions fitted and the cars grrrreat :) well chuffed you would say, but the steering is a bit heavy for my puny tetra arms, when the cars @ a lower speed the steerings fine but when going @ higher speeds the steering is to heavy, my question is, is it possible to have the steering lightened? and if so how much do you think it would cost me @ vw dealership?. .... also my metalic paintwork has loadsa light circular scratches in it, is there a polish that could help with these?.... many thanks....... :)

Hello maxie. Sorry to hear about you're disability, I know what it's like, my father is paraplegic and has hand controls in his car.
The power steering turns itself off at a certain speed, to make driving more enjoyable I think, but it becomes light when at low speeds for easy manouvres etc. Not sure if it can be permanently switched on, someone will be able to help you though here on the forums.

As for the scratches n the paintwork, they are swirl marks, the only way to properly remove these is with a machine polisher and with the right valeting techniques and products. A valeter will be able to give you're car a good going over to remove every imperfection in the paintwork. Prices vary, ask in the detailing section for more imformation.

Pretty sure that you can have the steering assistance level changed via VAGCOM. VW could do it for you or one of the guys on here who has it. Hope that helps.

The steering can be lightened using VCDS. I'm pretty sure your dealer won't do this for you so you may have to find someone in your area to do the necessary using VCDS. It will only take a few minutes.

As for the swirls, avoid the dealer and ask a professional mobile detailer for his opinion.

Steering can be adjusted on a scale between 1 - 5. Default setting is 3, so adjustment either way. Need VAG.com or similar.
