Title: No service history - how can i go about getting one?
Post by: hobbes on 03 May 2009, 19:28
Last year i bought a 16v project car but without any history.  Is there any legitimate way I can go about trying to build it up?  I can't think of one but thought i might at least try here to see if anyone has any ideas?

Try contacting the last owner and see if they can help.

if the car is mot'ed or has been mot'ed you can get the mot history from the dvla website but only goes back to 2006 if your lucky

Sometimes the local VW dealership has limited records of what work has been carried out on that car at that dealership. Long shot, but I got something out of them. Bearing in mind, it's only a printed A4 sheet of paper!!!

I had the same problem when i bought mine, i wrote to the owner before the guy i bought it from but had no joy there, i went to my local vw dealership and they checked my reg on dialogue and got me a print off which had on who originally bought the car and when it was serviced at vw

As said you can also reprint any old mots from when they went computerised

I also contacted the dvla about retrieving the details of the previous owners but i never went any further with it as couldnt actually find out what form i needed

About 3 years ago I got all the previous ownership history on mine from the DVLA, you have to write to them though and there is a small fee. It must be a legit enquiry though. They provided photocopies of all the previous V5 docs, there's info on their website on how to go about it. I wouldn't advise trying to contact prvious owner though, I was lucky with one and found he was a club gti member & got some info, but one I wrote to was an old boy and turned out he had recently died  :embarassed: Best not to dig too deep.

Thanks for the advice.  I've just got the last few years mot info and two or three of the mots are from the same garage so i might try them.
