there's a metal clip that holds the cable end on (it slots over the rubber).. but i would also say you'll need a new cable as the auto adjuster will now be ruined!!
It's also possible the clutch arm ratchet has gone so make sure you can feel the tension on the arm and if its slack you'll need these pieces (for sale if needed ).. thisis what happend to mine and luckily a specialist told me the ratchet is quite common (after a few garages told me the box had gone!)

the arm seems fine its just the clip im after!!!

I don't think parts will be open on a bank holiday.

it is possible to rest the auto adjusters but it is easyer to buy another cabel, just get the one with manual adjustment

Just bumping this as my clip broke. I got that replaced but the auto tensioner will not release. I have read that it can be done but I cannot remember how. Skint at the moment for new cable and car is stuck. Anyone help please .

I 100% agree....the adjusters are never the same after a full stretch! and I guess you'll get a few miles before it seizes (and possibly damaging your clutch!)
