You make sure the amp is more powerful? Correct? But is this using the RMS figures or the max power.
I'm after a cheap install in my car, don't need a sub box as I'm mounting it in a custom enclosure.

RMS to RMS is what I go for. Currently on a Alpine Type R 12" Sub with a Vibe A7 Mono Block. Its a 600w amp to a 500w sub. Works fine.

I'm after a sub and amp that will do the job for under £100, thinking about getting a package and taking sub out of the box. don't need it powerful as I'm not into huge dance type bass.
-
RMS every time IMHO :)
Out of interest, if you're going to take the sub out of the box, where will you put it? There's a whole issue with TS parameters (these enable you to get the maximum efficiency out of a sub & enclosure - the lot should be matched together)
Hope this helps :)

as dan said, dont take the sub out of the box as it will sound aweful unless you put in into another box which is built specifically for that sub..
always choose a more powerful amplifier than you need and run medium gain, or tweek it to your needs

I'm making a box that will fit into my wheel arch in the boot

cool, just keep size into cosideration and you should be fine...
