Title: Rotten around the fuel filler
Post by: Llewellyn on 01 May 2009, 13:17
Just been fitting lowering springs on the golf and noticed it is fairly rotten around the filler cap, but on the inner skin. i picked at it and its quite a large hole now lol

How much of an issue is this?

Should i just not bother taxing it today, and look for a shell?  MOT is next week so would sensible to take it off the road now?

Fibre glass + Filler, cover in underseal and drive round a muddy field to cover it up. That'll get you through the MOT and then you can get it looked at later.

Mine has a few holes around here, wasnt a problem for the MOT. I would not imagine it would be either.
Im looking at doing it over the summer, getting a mate to weld in a new bit of panel, then get that small section sprayed, not the whole rear quarter, as it is contained within two break lines.

inner skin...so the hole is not visible from the outside but only visible from under the arch?

I doubt that would even get looked at come MOT time

Well it is a big section of the car missing, and it is close to the top strut mount,

It is not the outer skin, that is fine, its the inner thats the problem.

How big? I think you'll find that this is within 300mm of the rear seat belt mounting which is an mot failure. Is it visible from the inside? I don't think the mot inspectors are obliged to remove carpet etc so if you do a fibreglass job, underseal & mud etc as described you may just get away with it........ :lipsrsealed: I think some inspectors are wise to this problem on golfs and it is clear on my car that the internal coverings have been pulled back to inspect the rear seatbelt and strut mount but only on the fuel filler side?  :undecided:

Thanks for all the comments.

I am really after knowing if its a real arse to repair, i dont want to be fibreglassing a car that is going to be driven hard in competition.

I would think to repair it is going to be a pain, you would to remove the fuel tank for a start then once you start grinding it might be a lot worse.

I dont mind if the the tank has got to come, out, as its going back to a bare shell for a rebuild.

Still think finding another shell is going to be easier

do you have to take the fuel tank out to repair it? or can you take the pipe out instead then block off the hole?

Unless the tank is empty i cant see why not or your just asking for trouble there mate. Its likely to catch fire/explode if your going to weld in that area!

A relative of mine had a car pit. The tank blew up because of a static charge that came off his clothing...with him in the pit! not worth messing around with fuel tanks, He nearly died and his garage burnt down.Scared for life.

yeah, fair. f**k getting roasted alive. il drop it out then. it should be a laugh welding it in, ive never welded before, and my mate greg says he can just about weld, so fun will ensue!

Yup. Remove the tank completely. And an empty tank is more prone to explosion than a full one. Empty tanks explode. Full ones burn savagely.
If the rest of the car is structurally sound, then I would say that a proper repair is worth the effort.
