i'm having some starting trouble and wondered if i can (using a couple of jump leads) directly connect the battery to the starter motor/solenoid to crank the engine???
-
Yes
-
Yes
is it as simple as battery (+ve) to starter (+ve), battery (-ve) to starter (-ve) (or earth?).
do i need to connect them up in a certain order?
will jump leads be ok to use?
thanks

What exactly are you trying to do? Are you bench testing the starter - or doing it whilst its on the car?
You just need to clamp the earth to anywhere on the starter casing and clamp the +ve to the +ve terminal on the solenoid. But you'll need to make a short length of wire to run from the +ve terminal on the solenoid to the spade trigger.

while it's in the car, as a means to start the car rather than bump starting :embarassed:

Whats wrong with the existing wiring in the car? Is the starter not turning over at all, or is it weak?

not turning over at all, battery ok

How do you know the battery is ok, how has it been tested?
When you turn the key, do you hear a click or nothing at all? If there is no click, it sounds like the solenoid. There should be a spade connector with a thinnish +ve trigger - make sure it is tight. If it is and still no joy, then use a small piece of wire and short the +ve feed from the battery to the spade, then post back.
That will at least rule out the solenoid / ign switch.

dont think there is any noise usually although sometimes hear the fuel pump prime.
i'll give that a try.

Your saying that it will not turn over, worth checking that the immob. has not stuck in.

this morning it started on the button.............i hate intermittent problems!!!
i bet when i finish work this afternoon it wont start again!!!

surprise surprise..........i come out of work and it didnt start!!!

Probably something stupid like a broken braid between the solenoid to motor.

how can i check that? whereabouts am i looking. is it like a wire?
started ok last night and again this luchtime???
it's that not knowing when it will next not start, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

On the solenoid there's a terminal which takes the +ve feed from the battery, then on the other side there's another terminal which outputs that feed via a bare wire to the starter itself.
It had snapped on my step dads car, but still made contact on occasion, so sometimes it would start, other times it wouldn't.

im wondering now if it is the immobiliser playing up??
it's an aftermarket autowatch 239ti (touch key)
it appears to disarm as normal but maybe it's being temperamental. is there anyway i can test/troubleshoot it?
started 3 times in successsion (fri night, sat lunchtime, sun morn) then when i got in it to come home this afternoon it wouldn't play ball for about 10 mins then bingo.
don't if there's anything it this but over the last week that it's been playing up it's always been during the warmth of the day (afternoon) rather than in the mornings??

Have it bypassed and see if the problems goes, if it is the problem have it replaced or removed all together.

update;
still failing to start (turn over) about 40% of the time, usually afternoons after being used earlier in the day.
however there was a new twist this morning; fired up 1st time but stalled immediately! restarted 2nd time but seemed abit rough.
did the same mid morning.
5pm fired up 1st time but died immediately, did this 6 times or so of trying. tried removing relay 167 (fuel pump?) just per chance and ensured other relays were pushed in correctly. tried again and it fired and ran. maybe coincidence?? maybe not. on journey and reaching home seemed abit rough/hunting at idle.
could this be related to my complete non turning over of engine over the last week, i wouldn't have thought so (fuel pump relay affecting operation of starter/ignition etc?) unless someone knows different?
has this non start problem evolved into this new problem or something else?
any thoughts much appreciated!!

back to original symptom, started ok last night but didn't want to turn over 1st few attempts at lunchtime today.
god why are there SO many different things that could be causing this!!!
-
look on the starter, you'll see a chunky red/black wire to a single pin connector. disconnect this and jump 12v onto the pin and the starter should turn the engine over.
if it does not its a starter fault, if it does its a ign switch, wiring or imobilisor fault.
-
ignition switch anyone?
-
been ok for over a week now!!!
-
you tried wiggling the keys in ignition?
-
Had a similar problem yesterday. Turned out the -ve lead that connects to the engine was dirty. Cleaned the connector and where it bolts to the engine and its been ok since.
HTH
-
ok for over 2 weeks then this afternoon didn't want to know for 20mins of continuous attempts....then all of a sudden fired up just like that!!!!
bloody thing!!!
