Title: Tacho not working
Post by: STi on 30 April 2009, 08:52
I have a 90MY Golf 8v.
Can anyone please help me with my tacho as it is not working at all.
I have tried all the connections etc, no fuses have blown and all earth straps are OK. all the other units in the meter assy are working fine.
Now I do not know its on related or not but I have just changed the head gasket, I had no problems with it but now my tacho does not work and I am getting interference from the radio ?
Any ideas ?
Sie.

you havent put all the wires back where they cam from.  tacho takes it's  signal form the LT side of the coil wires ether on the wrong side or not on

I'd double check the ground off the rocker cover, that tends to cause the above.

I have checked again and have found that the feed from the coil was slightly disconected.
All sorted now !
Thanks lads.

This is the only post I've found after searching through many similar to a problem I have with 89F 16V.  Tacho works, sometimes.  Usually when engine cold and just started.  Goes for about 2 to 3 miles max then stops.  Also, when warmed up the speedo flickers below 40mph!  No idea what this is but have been quoted I need a new dashboard pod at £350!!  Not really the technical type to get involved but happy to give it a go unless it is the dashboard pod!  Any thoughts/suggestions welcomely received please!

Just had this on our 89 8v (see my very recent posts), you probably need replacement clocks (pod) as the fault is probably on one of the circuit boards rather than the rev counter itself. You can get clocks off ebay for £25, you might need to get a few before you get one that works right, but they're easy enough to change and even if you got 4 (and you don't get your money back on the duff ones) thats only £100......find someone who knows a bit, you can get the old ones out and new ones in about an hour if you know what you're doing (2 hrs if its your first time). An 89F would probably need 2 pin clocks.

Good stuff, cheers for the steer, I'll grab a Haynes or friend (or both!) and get some clocks - noted re. 2 pin.  Many thanks again.
