To change the sump gasket (car drips oil) without paying £45 labour for a garage to do it lol ?
Any how to's by any chance? I wanna attempt it myself.
Cars a 16v ABF

Should just be straight unbolt job, after draining oil obviously, you could give it a good clean out while its off too!!
-
its easy just done mine
theres alot on bolts holding the sump on and you
will need 10mm socket on a bar.
got the metal/rubber one from gsf.

The bolts between the engine and gearbox can be a bit challenging if i remember right.
-
Easy enough to do but can be a messy job plus can be easier to do on a ramp.
-
Oh right, so the only difficult bit is getting underneath the car? but its just a straight bolt off jobby then?

Yes but drain the oil first, I have done a few and it is easy enough to do.

Run car nice and hot
Ramp up car
Open Oil filler cap (and cover with cloth to prvent crap getting in)
Place big container underneath
Undo bolt (not usually tight)
Wait for oil to finish leaving vehicle (about 5 litres)
(good opportunity to replace oil filter if it needs doing as well, another case of unscrew/screw)
Change washer and clean up bolt
Screw back in, clean up mess, refill oil, lower car, check for leaks.
You've just completed a complete oil change.
Answer, if you hav ramps and the right sized spanner... easy.
If you have jack stands, a little harder... (only because you have to jack up the car)

Don't forget to check the oil pump pick up pipe while the sump is off..

Hi ok i have a question.
I went to do this the other day on my 96 valver. Drained the oil / removed filter awkward but ok. Then I went to remove the sump but couldn't. What was causing me a problem was where the engine attached to the gearbox there appears to be an large C shape alloy casting that goes all the way accross the short side of the sump and send two 'fingers' down each side for about 5". Not sure that makes any sense, anyhow this 'casting' covers the sump bolts preventing them from being removed.
Can anyone tell me what this thing is and how to remove it? if it helps the two 'lugs' that the smaller plastic sump guard thingy attaches to are attached to this.
edit - Found it according to vagcat its 'support for engine/transmiss. / ABF'
I've done the service now however I'd love to know how to do it ready for the next oil change.
Cheers

is this the rear engine mount?
