managed to install coilovers on the gti no problem yesterday untill we realised once we let the car down the inside of the wheels are rubbing onto the springs, i tried 5mm spacers today but that didnt cure it, so next step is stretched tires, but i need some advice on what size to go for, the tires on the car now are 205x50x15, would 195x45x15 be enough?
-
Are they factory wheels if so they should be nowhere near the springs, you could switch to 195/50/15's or put 3mm spacers in.
195/45/15's would look silly to be honest.

yeh there standerd gti wheels, i wonder if maybe the camber is set to far back?

Is it only the front, if so then yes I would check the camber.
-
would guess you have tighted the lower strut bolts wrong so there is too much camber.
-
ok will do, ill go for the 195/50/15's to so it can definatly sit lower without trouble of rubbing
-
has to be the camber...mine got 195's so it didn't foul the arches at -75mm and they had loads of clearance on the inside (even the 205's did)
-
the height should make no differnce to the wheels rubbing on the springs... only the arches
-
hmm ok, well im going to get new tires anyway, how about 185/55/15 on the standard 6 1/2J wheels?
-
195/50 to keep the speedo true

get your camber sorted as a priority... otherwise any tyres you pop on with be fcuked pretty sharpish
-
If your going to switch the tyres I would use 195/50/15's this was the factory size on earlier cars and can be cheaper than 205/50's.
But as Guy said sort the camber first.

Is it just me, or is anyone thinking if the camber is this far out, it must look AWESOME. lol
