Title: engine transplant
Post by: benji mk2 on 02 August 2004, 16:47
I am about to put a mk2 1.8 8v into my mk1 gti. Just wondering if any one had any little bits of advice or tips to give me before I start? I'm new to the whole veedub thing so any info would be greatly appreciated.

 Cheers

Hi Ben.
Is it a k jet (mechanical fuel injection) mk2 engine or a digifant (electronic fuel injection)?. If it is a k jet it is a straight swap, but you will have to use your mk1 manifolds.

You will also have to use all the MK1 engine mounts, this includes fitting the one behind the cambelt which the MK2 doesnt have, but the bolt holes are there :)

Its an easy swap, but remember to fit that mount before you replace the cambelt ;)

If you line up the timing marks you wont have a problem, you could also mark the pulleys (including the aux distributor drive pully)  against the block & head with some tippex, this might make it easier and more visual for you :)
