sent my gearbox from my kr engine off to be stripped down and re-build, got the phone call today that its fooked and may aswell through it away.
Just wanted to know what my options are? can I use a mk3 abf gearbox and will that be better? cant remember if they are cable shift?
cheers Tom

im currently running a 2.0ltr 8v gti mk3 box. Its a bit better on fuel and still pulls really well. 70 m.p.h in second and wont get to the limiter in 5th no matter how long you wait but still does 140m.p.h.

so will a 020 be better off the lights?
-
if you want short nippy ratios mk1 1600 gti box iirc the code is FD
-
is that 4 or 5 speed?
-
iirc its a 5 speed not meany of them about now tho

Depends what you're after really. Fit an 8v 'box, and you'll lose the high end revs of the std 'box. If you're after fuel economy, I've heard of people fitting the fifth gear out of a driver 'box. Personally, stick with the standard 'box and fit an LSD.....

try the mk1 close ratio box you'll find more revs there, sub optimal or high speed motorway cruseing tho

i have an fd in my cabby 16v, it is proper quick off the line but as said its buzzy in 5th! (4.1k at 80mph)
possible solution is to swap in a taller 5th from a longer geared box, though if you go too mad the jump from 4th to 5th might be a bit much.
