Hi all,
After years of wanting one I'm going to buy my first GTI. Always wanted a MK2 and have seen one for £800 with new cambelt, clutch and gearbox. It's a 1991 8v 5 door in red and looks pretty clean (hasn't gone pink).
Then I came accross a really low mileage (44k) 1997 mk 3. It's up for 2k but looks brand new. I know it's personal choice but anyone got an opinion on what to do?
I'm not that handy with cars so I'm tempted by the Mk3. Any thoughts would be great.

Looks good. Are most people on the site interested in modifying? Just had a look through some of the pics and most were mod. I want to get a one that is completely original.

I keep getting drawn by awesomly modded and smooth mk3's... but however I have just bought my 5th mk2 today..........
So yeh, keep it in the family with the mk2!

mk2 for sure i had to sell mine and bought a mk3 regreted ever since but recently bought a corrado

did not read the start, but get a MK2. MK3's are like the Titanic, eventually they sink and rot. Give it another year and all the MK3's will be gone from the world as we know.
-
welcome m8 :)

Go test drive both and make your OWN mind up!
or you could listen to those people with mk2's tell you to buy one and people with mk3's tell you to buy one of them!
I've got a mk3 and love it!! but would love a mk2 as just love the look of them (never driven one). Which ever you end up with just make sure you give it a good going over. . . check service history, check for rust etc! end of the day its your choice buddy don't listen too much to what others say as its you who is driving it!
if it were me. . not YOU, and looked at a mk3 at 2k i'd go to that budget on a mint little mk2! seen dome great ones for around that price.
welcomes to!

Spend the £2000 on a sh!t hot mk2, they are also very easy to work on, all you need is a Haynes manual and a hammer. I have had two mk3s and three mk2s, I thought both mk3s were awful cars. The mk2s look better, handle better, go faster, if you are over 25 you can insure them on a classic policy for £200! What more could you want from a car?
Lets compare...

IMO - I'm pretty happy with my mk3 (lol at Dub90 ,k3 photo  its hideous!!)
I've never actually driven a mk2 so can't comment on what its like to drive but I much preffer the looks of a really clean, looked after mk3.
but like DrewGTI said, test drive them both and make up your own mind
All the best and hope you enjoy what you get!

If you want something reliable then get a Mk 3! But not and 8v! Deffo a 16v or a VR6.
If you enjoy having an unreliable car or like seeing it sat on the dive for weeks on end then by all means get a Mk 2.
-
Mk 3 for the win!
-
Yo
mk2 all day long
-
Remember a MK3 is a lot heavier.

Right, Listen to me buddy!
I had a mk2 1.6 last year. Had cheap coilovers on there but car handles like a kart and for a 1.6 8v it had some decent go. Car was a drivers car. LOVED IT!
I then sold it to buy a mk3 gti 8v. Car is quiet, comfortable, has some pretty good torque, handling is pretty good now the wishbbones are polybushed, and its got new top mounts and ball joints, and car looks pretty good.
But.
Mk2 is much more FUN. If you want fun then buy a mk2 without a doubt. They are extremly fun.
If you want a car to get you to work and back, to hack the daily roads with soft suspension and no wind noise and little road noise, then buy a mk3.
I know (and chuff knows) what car I want to be in come next renewal.
