Did tag this on an old thread but dont think it got noticed..
Is there different sizes in strut top mounts because the one I bought from gsf and went to fit sunday was about 1/2" taller than the one of my golf so had to put the strut back in with old one fitted? Searched and searched but cant find any info and sure I read a few month back that 16v strut tops were shallower? Anybody?

just got two new genuine 16v ones today, only cost £20 each. I will measure them and let you no the height. i know the 16v is lower than the 8v from standard but wether they achieved this by different top mounts im not sure.

The old one will be slighty more compressed. I always fit new ones together. same height then

not sure if this is true but i think i heard that you can buy top mounts that do make the car lower because they are smaller? could the car have been fitted with these before you owned the car?

on a MK2 there was 2 types, the bog std one and a stronger mount for the G60. I dont believe there was any difference in height between them though? But I've never compared new std & G60 ones side by side.

Have just digged out an old mount I replaced on my 8v. Looks to be about 45mm tall, I'm guessing it's been on there for the full 90-92k the car had done at that point.

Cheers for that Steve. The new one I have here is about 55mm height :undecided:
Dont really wanna do both side to even it up but how do I find out wether mine are lowered or does it really compress over the years? I doubt it.

I would always recommend changing suspension parts as an axle pair, much the same as brakes.

Usefull advice
Well I thought id give it a shot and done the one mount today and yep..car sits 3/4 inch higher one side  Taking the old one back to GSF to see what they reckon but it aint right. Seen some pictures of top mounts online and they look the same as the one ive taken off,,definately lower that the one I bought. I want the car bloody lower not on stilts :embarassed:

Get yourself OEM VR6 ones, they are stronger.
