When the golf gets hot now, it dumps all its water on the ground.
It does its when it get to just above half on the temp gauge.
I have changed the cap for another second hand one, of my dads audi 80, which was operating fine on my 8v gti, but it still does it. There is no sign of headgasket failure thats over pressurising the system, so i'm not sure what it could be.
I can pick up another cap tomorrow from GSF and see if that changes things, but the cap that was on it looked newish.
Not sure what next
cheers

thermostat?

Just ran it again. the cap doesnt seem to pull down quite right onto the expansion tank.
When you tighten it as it seals, the thread pops off as it gets tight.
Also when you squeeze the top hose to the rad, i can hear air escaping through the cap. Surely this should be sealed?
Cheers

Where is the water coming from? the actual filler cap?
-
Check the rubber o ring inside the cap. If it comes off its placement it causes pressure to escape. Just buy a brand new one for under a tenner from the Dealers to be safe. Make sure you get the blue cap.

The water is coming from the cap. Im surprised both caps are duff, but surely i shouldnt here air when i squeeze the top hose.

New header and cap may be the way to go. The plastic threads may be getting a little tired after nearly twenty years of screwing! I think I may be a little tired to after so much screwing too. :lipsrsealed:

I had this problem on mine so from experiance I would advise that you buy geniune parts, they cost more but they are better qaulity items.

Agreed, I bought one from GSF and it was not great, so I got one from VW and it has been fine.

deffo buy genuine, i bought a new febi pre-90 header tank and it leaks from the level sender hole. Tried with a brand new febi level sender and a known good VW one, both the same. Would have thought febi would make their own level senders seal with their tanks properly, but hey ho.
