Title: My 1.8t FMIC install project.
Post by: Ben on 25 April 2009, 19:39
we have been playing with a few ICs over the past week and so far the best combination we have come up with is in the pics below.  A bit of cutting the bumper and cross member to get a neat fit without of making the IC look chavy, plus the all the pipe will be meeting up to the pipes where the oem ic fits.

Should be round £200-£250 depending on what its going to cost to have a pipe made up which will house the map sensor and connect the cold side of the ic to the tb ic pipe.

Looks good Ben :afro:

What FMIC and pipes are they?

The IC is from the usa the same type which some of the vortex 1.8t guys are using, but with our own pipe work setup.  We have 3 sizes of this style IC to play with but the one in the pic is the best fit once a small section of the cross member has been cut out to allow the ic to moce up 30mm and bolt on flush.

Hello m8,

The route we have started to take is unique it think,  The idea is that all you see is the IC and the two 90deg bends in the bumper. On the left hand side there will be another 90 bend and straight pipe with a map sensor seat, which will connect direct to the TB pipe. The right hand hot side ic pipe will have two 90 bends which will take a long pipe close to the SAI pump, then another 90 bend to connect to the pancake pipe, so there will be no ic pipes in the engine bay. Then all the pipes will be wrapped with thermal wrap to reduce any risk of added heat soak. (apart from the 2 pipes on show)

The only down fall is that some people wont want there front cross member cut?  We have a good solution for a direct bolt on IC kit with the same pipe work as i mentioned above but using the R32 bumper without the need of cutting the cross member. But to get a neat sweet install with the std bumber the grinder needs to come out for 5 mins, and the back of the bumper needs to be trimmed with a hot iron.

Post by: Grand Master Patch on 25 April 2009, 21:57
My R32 bumper had to trimmed to fit over the ABD intercooler(they are a US firm and they have bigger bumpers than us in the UK),to squeeze it in behind a std bumper is amazing

The vents can be adjusted to fit. but the car looks a lot better with out them fitted imo.

Post by: T_J_G on 26 April 2009, 10:02
Could you fit them and show pics, I want a FMIC but would have to be more discreet.
Title: Re: My 1.8t FMIC install project.
Post by: Ben on 26 April 2009, 13:46
I dont think there is away of making the pipes discreet as they sit proud of the vent cut out,  We cut the vent to fill the gap but it did not look to good. We will be playing with the FMIC design over the next few weeks. This week should see one of our the custom exhausts on my car

Ben, what induction kit have you got on? Thought you'd be running the dsg intake?

Hello,

No, the hot side pipe will be near the SAI just under the oil filter, the idea is that all you see is the two front 90 bends keeping it really neat..

I get you now, behind the radiator. That's not a bad idea,i might move mine to run that route.I sometimes hear mine clang on the floor when driving hard on roads with dips on.

Yup behind the rad,

we have produced a mock up pipe for the pipe which will go behind the rad once the tooling is made up for that pipe we are ready to get it fully up and running.  Its like a maze on the AUM with, air con.
The pipes to the exsisting IC pipes are to be made from a generic off the shelf pipe with a seat for the map sensor to be fitted not an issue with the AGU setup.

You've gotta love the AGU,shame about the turbo

Will you be running the std pancake pipe,or will you be losing that aswell?
