hi recently bought a 16v golf. kr engine 1.8 i believe ,can any one shed any light on weather it has just a cambelt or chain or both ive been in to my local dealership to confirm the engine fitted to it as previous owner fitted a corrado engine to it cant get any info from engine block so its like searching for a needle in a haystack.thanks in advance .max

Timing belt runs one cam and the other is driven by a chain at the opposite end of the rocker cover :)
-
so i have both? thanks for that is the chain ever likely to snap? like a belt! should i get both changed at the same time have managed to get part numbers for belt 027109119c and tensioner 051109243 just need to locate pt number for chain if i should have to get it changed ! also should i use genuine vw or is ecp good enough ? sorry for the list only want to have this done once
-
with regards to the belt and temsioner people reccomend genuine vw. Saying that I got mine from german sweedish car parts :undecided:. They will do the chain too
-
You wouldnt normally expect to have to swap the chain at the same time as the belt but its worth checking the chain to see if its stretched I suppose. Not sure where you would get a figure to check it and there are a couple of ways of checking chain stretch, but worth a look.

If there is no sign on the chain ever being replaced then change it and the tensioner as they will be past their best by now and its amazing the difference a properly tensioned chain makes

right if ive got this right been on gsf site for parts is this correct and am i missing any thing timing belt pt num 13109 timing belt tensioner pt num 13140 timing chain-cam 13160 timing belt tension.stud pt num 13132 is there another tensioner for the chain ? all help so far much appreacted thanks. max

no tensioner for the chain just goes on the end of each cam
-
do belt and tensioner, as for the chain they normaly outlast the engine if it rattels in needs changeing but on a regualy serviced engine they rarely show any sings of wear
