Ok, despite having the eye incident ive decided...... Bugger it im treating my self to some fun. A friends grandad own a restaurant and next to him is an estate agents, the guy that owns it is fairly old. He is selling his black 5door GTi (R reg 16V), its got 85000 miles on the clock. Needs a bit of work on outter shell (light scuffs ect), needs a new rear wiper motor and my leather seats to be transfered over. It hasnt been battered but, and its a big BUT. It needs a new cooling bottle and possible head gasket. What would i have to do to flush the cooling system out (incase of any gunk and its been standing around for about a month) and how much would your average head gasket cost and what future problems accour after the gasket is replaced ????.

It sounds like it runs fine, just doesnt use it anymore as he has a new toy............ 4.2litre Audi Q7 :evil:
Almost forgot would my coolant bottle in my 1.6 - 75KW be ok to transfer over, they look the same so i personally couldnt see why there would be a problem :nerd:

Oh another question, Now ive heard it from a number of people, Are the 16V 2.0 Mk3 GTI's Rare. Or is that just rubbish :huh:

No they are not rare at all. They are on par with the VR6 iirc

Thought so, just the old sods ploy to sell the car. Sneaky old people hehe. Checked it out again today and looking under it, its got a full brand new exhaust system and upgraded brakes (front and back(brembo)) :laugh: . Checked the suspension and as i thought (like my current MK3) the front and back shocks are wearing out :embarassed: . If i do go for it how can i get that power back. well i presume you'll be putting it on coilies anyway... you can do the bushes and mounts at the same time

you could use wynns cooling system flush to clear the crap out

Well he said the head gasket might have gone, im not really and expert in that field so i thought i had better ask about it. In which case what are the signs that the head gasket has gone (tho will learn from the masters one day :laugh: )

go for it mate..at that money its nothing even if it turns out to be a dud...£150...16v are more tunable than the 8v but only just...in terms of the shocks etc...coillies/bushes and poss top mounts if needed...should handle well providing you don't get a hottunning setup...the price of the car you can spend a little more :tongue:

have you checked the oil filler cap to see if there is any white residue underneath it... this would be a very good visual indication that the head gasket was knackered

You're looking for a 'mayonaise' like substance, if there is there's a good chance it's the head gasket, another one is plumes of white smoke out the exhaust when it's warm! :afro:
