Title: 300 miles on a tank...
Post by: Asbo Sovfinger on 23 April 2009, 21:52
Just put my second full tank in and have only just crept over 300 miles.  This is mainly short journeys with one motorway journey of about 140 miles.  That sound ok??

Interestingly I only managed to get just over 40 litres into the tank and I thought the tank was 55 litres should I be concerned or have I been reading the wrong literature

confused. .  .

so you've filled two tanks worth and only just got over 300 miles?

or one tank like the subject title says and got over 300?

Seem to get alot more on Super Unleaded from Tesco rather than the standard stuff.

Got 380 driving to Kettering! Well impressed.

depends how you drive and how well your car/engine is maintained.

i got 360 out of a full tank of just normal unleaded with only a few foot down moments.  but then on the other hand did not much more than 200 on the same tank due to alot more foot downs!!

You should try my 5 series, £75 to fill the tank and lucky to see 400 miles.

i get around the same on my 8v. Maybe even less, 270-300. If i drive real carefully i get around 38mpg, but floor it and i see low 20s.

Sorry, I should've said that it's my second full tank but I disconnected the battery between 1st and 2nd tank so couldn't really compare the two in terms of mileage etc.

Sounds like 300's a fair amount then seeing as 90% of the time I drive carefully, but I do have a couple of lovely routes that I drive frequently that I can't help but bring the noise.  Will have to find some more slopes for a bit of free-wheeling perhaps

I can usually get 250 out of £30, so a full tank being about £50 - 60 (???) would get me 500+ :) I drive like a numpty at times as well so must be good.

Nope, I never expected my 5 series to be very good on petrol, it is a big heavy car with a 6 cylinder engine plus its an auto.

To be honest this month it has only had a few long runs, I never normally do that amount of miles, just a few friends have lent it for various reasons.

Now my 1.6 8V Mk3 on a full tank of carefull driving on the M4, 80miles round trip works out to only get 350miles. I do 65 (70 for overtakes) and the damn thing just drinks. Is this normal for a 1.6. Reading posts im assuming you lot have mostly got GTI's. Seeing as i am getting  a 2.0 16V Mk3 will i moan more

To be honest you should find a 16v at least the same or better, yours will suffer as it is a small engine in a heavy car.

Just driven from worcestershire to the lake district (i do it twice a week) and got a record 46.7 mpg from my gti colour concept. took me 2 hours and 40 mins. i was trying to keep it at 70ish (down to 65 over hills). My average for this journey is approx 43mpg. Not sure why this particular journey was so good although i was behind a large vehicle for about 80 miles inbetween birmingham and manchester; i guess the drag helped me along.

My mpg info on mfa 2 is 41.1mpg over the last 3094 miles. Not bad eh?

I'm well feeling the V-power difference, I'm usually lucky to get 320 out of a tank of 95, but brimming it with V-power so far has given me 350, and I've got about half of the reserve left.
Title: Re: 300 miles on a tank...
Post by: Asbo Sovfinger on 05 October 2009, 07:17
I'm getting nowhere near 300 now as I'm only rarely doing journeys of more than 10 miles, most are only 3-4.  Did a long motorway stint at the 1st fillup this month and was getting 45mpg but it's dropped drastically since then.  The most difficult thing I find is that once the fuel gauge hits the top of the red reserve section it doesn't move so I've got no way of telling how much reserve there is, although I've never put more that 40 litres of fuel in.  Makes it really hard to eke a tank out.  Anyone else find the gauge doesn't move from the top of the red?

so it went like this
95 octane + one lucas fuel additive + brand new air intake + not much stopping = 505 still with barely enough to get to the fuel station  :smug:

My valver is cheap compared to what i got used too, and i'm only 18

My old saab, i was normally just over £80 to fill up (could only run premium because of tune), and got 250 miles.... eat that boys for poor mpg lol  On a topspeed run with it once, i managed to get an average of just over 4mpg over a 3 minute period lol. But then  on the other hand i drove down and got to about london on one tank driving carefully (approx 550miles the tripometer was saying).

With my valver, i have been commuting from edinburgh to aberdeen every weekend. Last time i did it i got 43mpg for the whole journey  thats ace  and at uni now (in other words skint) i'm getting 45mpg wherever i go, although that involves no heater, no radio, heaps of free wheeling even about town, sticking to 60 on motorway, changing gear always at about 3000, but its doable. Oh, and the most important thing, making sure i don't hear induction sound. Then i know i'm accelerating too fast   I'm gonna get over 500 on my next tank, i'll fill up to the top and take note of the mileage, then report back.

Mine shoots to 99.9 when I reset it, then slowly settles back down to the 30s/40s
Title: Re: 300 miles on a tank...
Post by: mgmt585 on 05 October 2009, 22:33
I thought it takes an average reading as of the moment you reset, so 99.9 is as you are probably going down hill, or in neutral, or not touching the accelerater, so you'll be getting much better than 99.9 but thats as high as it goes, then it averages out...

I use my 8v for long commutes at present which over the week mount up to approximately 420 miles, and i always do this on 1 tank of fuel, been doing the same journey for 7 weeks, and it consists of a bit of motorway and A roads.. average speed over the run is around 50mph...and usually put in around 45-50litres..
The fuel gauge i think doesn't read right low down, as i always run into the reserve...the MFA generally reads around 40mpg over the tank (as i reset it every time i fill up), and the most i've seen on a individual run is 48mpg, but typically 40..
Around town before my long commutes cam along, i was getting around the 300miles to the tank.

Since I put the new battery in about 3 months ago my valver is averaging 36.2mpg - which is a mix of conservative, and well... not so conservative driving. If I drive like my mum then it does 42mpg all day long. Lots of country roads and long sweeping bends that are too tempting not to attack on my way to and from work- albeit within the national speed limit though. Considering my mk2 16v only managed to averag 22mpg (although it was far from standard at 178bhp) then its quite good. No idea what I get from a tank as I've never measured it - but drive to work is 30 miles so 60 miles a day 5 times a week - 300 miles - and still 1/4 of a tank left most of the time.
