try the fuel filter next, had exactrly the same issue on my 16v, it wouldnt start but would run with some easystart sprayed into the intake.

do you actually hear the fuel pump run?

yeh i put a new fuel filter on thats the one that is with the fuel pump? also since i fitted the new fuel pump you can smell fuel in the engine bay now which you couldn't before

yeah its the thingy next to the fuel pump, with a connection in each end. the fuel smell could be due to the engine has flooded! pop the plugs out and check for fuel in the bores :)

when you're cranking the engine is the fuel pump running?

As RJ said, blast some easystart into the intake and see if it fires, at least it will rule out spark.

If its an 87, I'm assuming K-Jet, have you got all your vac hoses hooked up properly. Make sure you have the main boot connected - without it, you'll get no fuelling at all.

i checked all the hoses and everything around the engine and everything is connected on tight and secure...when i sprayed the easystart in it starts then cuts out about 2 seconds after but if you keep on spraying it in it keeps turnin over but then cuts out....and yeh you can hear the fuel pump when you turn the ignition...whats the main boot connection??

I'm still guessing you've got K-Jet as you haven't said yet

The main boot is the big rubber union that goes between the metering head and the throttle body. K-Jet runs off intake vacuum, if you've been spraying easy start in, then you'll never have fuel because you will have removed the boot between the the intake and metering head.

Sounds like your spark is fine, so move onto fuel now. Again, assuming its K-Jet, you'll see two fuel lines running to the metering head from the left hand chassis leg, one is a return, one is a send. It doesn't really matter which, but crack the banjo bolt off the metering head and crank the engine - check for fuel flow (watch out for fire though!).

If there is flow then go to b) otherwise

It could be either the lift pump or main pump that isn't working. This is easy enough to check by cracking off the inspection cover in the boot above the fuel tank. Removing the send fuel line and cranking the engine. If it spurts fuel out, then its fine, but the main pump isn't - if it doesn't, remove it and find out why. If the main pump is at fault, sometimes it still whirrs away, but doesn't actually do anything - for this you'll need to remove it from the fuel pump housing (disconnect the two fuel lines off the tank pump to prevent it emptying fuel everywhere), sit the pump in a small cup of petrol and connect 12v to it  (don't make it spark and set yourself alight).

b) Once you know the metering head is being fed, you need to check the injectors for flow. Crack off one of the injector fuel lines off the top of the metering head. There should be 5, one is for the cold start injector in the intake manifold, the others for the main injectors - remove one of these lines. Again, crank the engine and see if you have flow.

I'd put money on it being a vacuum leak, however, if you are unfortunate and it is not, then you'll need a fuel pressure gauge to tell exactly what's going on.

If its Digi, then ignore everything I said

I don't know much anything about Digi, but I'm sure others can help!

have you disconnected the fuel lines off the rail at any point?

no haven't disconnected any of them?? could it be something to do with a blockage in the fuel lines??

wasgoingto say they could be back to front, but thats ruled out. maybe the fpr on the end of the rail has packed in, or the injectors are not firing.  if you crack loose the pipe to the plastic fuel rail, is there fuel in there?  Check the wires to the end of the fuel rail havent snapped.  If it looks good, check the red wire on the rail, this should be live whenever the fuel pump is on.

right then i have taken all your advice and im gonna give it a good go at trying to start the golf over the weekend...im gonna try the injectors because i think it is those so how do 1. get to the injectors 2. get the injectors off so i can see if there blocked?? 3. if they are blocked how do i go about by unblocking them if it is that?? cheers
