Title: Electrical wiring for boost gauge - finally completed
Post by: T_J_G on 22 April 2009, 21:26
Now as you all know I fitted my boost gauge today but left the wiring. I have two wires one going to earth and one going to the dimmer switch.

So i'm guessing the earth ones just goes to a metal chassis part or does it connect into another loom? And where abouts does the one going into the dimming switch do i have to cut a wire and put a scotchblock in or similar :S Couldn't find any guides that covered it!

I'm useless with electrics.

Thanks
Tim

tim the earth wire connects to a common point under the dash there are some earths there and iirc there is a spare connection that vw kindly left   use this for the earth and the one to the dimmer switch which is iirc the blue/grey wire either solder in or use a scotch lock hth

why don't you ask me nicely and I'll open this package with your loom in and I'll solder on 2 wires for your boost gauge connection before it gets sent to you

That would be kind but the back of the gauge is sealed. I ideally want to get it sorted today as well. Thanks anyway :)

Riiight guys,

This is the dummer switch and you can see the grey blue cable (although due to the light you can only spot it as it enters the connecter, so I need to cut this cable and attach the boost gauge cable. Does that mean all 3 cables are connected together?! The earth one I can manage but this confuses me!

Right done it, but the backlight doesn't seem to work. I've tried using the button that changes colours but nothing :(

strange, is there only a +ve and -ve feed for the gauge? No other wires?

There' an illumination wire and a ground wire. I'll have to check when it's dark tonight.

From SWG:

Hi
The gauge needs a solid live feed not one from the dimmer switch, we have not had any faulty NSP gauges, please disconnect the feed leave for a few minutes then reconnect checking all the connections are correct and solid , it should work ok.

yeah that kinda makes sense, the rheostat control might throw the voltage out.

Glad you've got it sorted mate

It's not sorted yet, that's using the dimmer wire. I need to use the permanent wire as the backlight doesn't work, should be able to change colours.

Haha!

I've only gone and done it, I took it out of the dimmer wire and put it into the grey permanent wire and bobs my uncle :) Also it only comes on with the lights :) Looks quite smart, not keen on the mount though. Thanks so much for all your help!

Some pics, bearing in mind it was sunny!

Yeah this one has 100 different colours, I'm going to sort the colouring tonight when it's dark to get the closest match to the dash! I think mine can't go on the dimmer wire due to the different colour backgrounds. Most gauges can though I think.

Quite satisfied I did that myself actually, albeit with LOTS of help!

So splicing into the blue green wire will mean the backlight on the boost gauge will dim with the dimmer? Or am I getting it all wrong?
