hi im gary ,i have a mk 2 gti and its running retarded,(its as if the automatic choke is on but there aint any ) ive put a new distributor and a new knock sensor (from germany ) in & had my timing checked , can any1 please help

Did you torque the knock sensor down to the specified setting?

8v or 16v, if 8v is it a kjet or digi? What makes you think its 'retarded'? The kjets do have a sort of automatic choke ie the warm up regulator and I guess the digis have something similar. You may have a faulty water temperature sender which is telling the engine it is 'cold' all the time. It could be that the mixture is running really rich, really weak or you have a vacuum leak somewhere.......perhaps the cambelt has slipped a couple of teeth? So many things it could be really. Any more info on the symptoms?

mine had been running poorly at low revs exhaust popping etc, struggled to climb hills, changed my knock sensor as my old one was split, plus the insulation was damaged, now runs a lot better and revs cleaner and more willing to climb hills. mines also a 8v digi
