My 1.6 Driver has a really annoying squeal coming from the engine on tick over, imagine someone slowly riding a bike with a squeaky wheel! It must be a common problem but what is it?
I only got the car a couple of days ago and didn't notice anything when I picked it up.

either alternator or pas belt.

either alternator or pas belt.
I would have thought it would sound quite quick if it was the alternator, it sounds like something turning really slowly.
-
not always, does it change with engine speed?

not always, does it change with engine speed?
I cant tell as the sound of the engine revving drowns out the sound.
-
Okay I had a good listen and it doesn't sounf like it increases with throttle, Its actually quite loud but I cant figure out where its coming from?
-
Is this when the car is stationary?
If the car isn't moving, and there's a whine that doesn't change frequency with the revs, then there's very little it could be.
I'd be thinking stereo whine, fan squeal etc.
If its when the car is moving, then if it changes with speed, but not revs, then I'd be guessing a heat shield rubbing on the brake disk, pad squeal, rustiest bearings on earth or a trapped mouse

I can hear it when stationry and its definatley coming from around the engine.

But its not related to the pace of the engine? You've got me bamboozled.

Imagine someone riding a bike with a squeaky wheel really slowly, its driving me insane
-
If its not related to the revs then it can't be a component in the engine! I can't think of any part which spins at a constant speed regardless of revs :undecided:

I had a squeek from my Passat V5, changed a dodgy tensioner - still there, changed the aircon pump - still there, changed the other tensioners - still there. Loaded the tensioners with grease, bingo! Gone. WTF is yours, could be the fan housing???????????????????
