I have had a really annoying exhaust issue for ages now. I finally got the car on a ramp to investigate what i thought was a blow somewhere, but the annoying rattly sound is coming from the downpipe. I had the downpipe replaced about a year ago and it seems that the metal used is thinner and allows the sound of the bottom the engine to resonate through. Has anyone ever encountered the same or similar and if so any ideas other than changing again. I have posted in the wanted section for a standaed downpipe too.

Sure it's not the exhaust shield rattling away somewhere?
-
Pretty sure it's not a heat shield rattling as if put your ear close to the bottom of the downpipe where it joins the front box the noise definitely seems to be coming from there.

Mines like this! sounds like a bag of ****! lol, someone suggested a heatshield to me but havent investigated yet, i always thought it was my manifold blowing.

Dan i thought it was manifold too but have done manifold gaskets and no change. I was wondering wether there is anything that can be sprayed somehow directly onto the exhaust to stop the noise. I know that this sounds a bit dodgy with the excess heat that the exhaust creates but i would rather not have to change the part as there are no blows in the system at all. Covered up both tailpipes and silence.

Yeah i know what you mean it really is annoying!, ive been told that the manifolds are sprone to cracking so could be that. Also mines got no blows it atm so im really stumped!

Wrap the down pipe with exhaust wrap. It's usually used to keep the engine bay cool and transfer the heat to under the car. But in your case, it would help quieten the resonance.

Resonator pipe may be fubared, try tapping it with something not too heavy and listen for a rattle. I had this problem once and it sounded like a bag of spanners.

DarnPB - Will i have to remove the pipe to do this or do you reckon i could get away with it in place?
OakeyDoak16v - Sorry to sound a bit thick but where is the resonator pipe?
