ive used vag-com 311.2 for a year now, with the correct cable should work fine, a obd2 reader wont work on most golfs as they obd1

It is because your car is OBD1 and not OBD2, it is a different protocol.

you need either vag-com, or a decent skyes-pickavant acr4 with the vag pod.

I bought one of these:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/409-1-KKL-VAG-COM-USB-OBD2-OBD-II-Diagnostic-Cable-Gift_W0QQitemZ270382440286QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Diagnostic_Tools_Equipment?hash=item270382440286&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1689|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

And use it with 409.1, I even bought a license!
