How the heck do you get wires/cables through the door grommet thing!!! ???
Had a look this evening and you unscrew a big nut shaped plastic knob and pull out and there is this multipin connector!
Thought I could just thread wires through the big grommet thing but no way through!
So c'mon folks somebody out there must have threaded wires through that area somehow!
Help!
-
So where are the Audio experts when ya need em?
But its beginning to look like I need to drill some holes!
-
Len,
I've not owned (nor even looked at) the grommets of a mk3
Get some pics up and I'll see if I can be of help.
-
Posted in Mk3 section too and kells has told me what he did.
Basically same as the conclusion I had come to in that you have to bypass the grommet/boot thing and drill seperate holes!
No way through that multipin socket!
Hopefully Billy can sort me some flexible cable protection!
-
dont sound good, i wanna re-wire my door components and looked at that gromit thinking f**k that :S
-
Yea mate its a nightmare when you pull it apart!
I mean I guess there are some spare pins and if you were a whizz with electrics might be able to sort it but for me no way!
prefer to have wires straight from amp to speaker without joints anyway!
-
same here :)
-
Sounds good already with just the Alpines in the dash.
Will be even better tonight when I fix the rear offside tweeter and fit the crossovers!
-
i havent even looked at mine yet, there running straight of my alpine head unit which is 200 watts and they sound pretty awesome as it is, but when i get my new power cable in for my sub amp and can crank that right up ill need to amp my comps :)
-
what i usedto do is this take the plug out chances are there will be some spare holes that havnt been filled with pins just drill them out aand thread tha wires thru drill the same ones on theconnecting plug job done easy i di my cavalier like that yeasr ago never had any problem with it
-
Yea but I'm going to need say an 8mm hole minimum.
Plus there is the chance of drilling through a wire on the car side etc.
Bit risky I think now.
-
just the way i would do it and id drill from the car side and if you did two holes ans split the wire you wouldnt need an 8mm hole just two 3 or 4 mm holes
did it have door speakers in already ? why not use those wires and connect them to amp at the head unit plug ?
-
Drilling from inside the car means taking the dash out!
-
edited my reply
-
Nope! Want good quality speaker cable direct from amp to speaker!
No point in buying decent speakers if you going to skimp on wiring them up!
-
Get ya self a drill & get drilling.
-
4ohm speakers dont really need all that thick a wire tbh.
for the components i would use the existing plugs that go through the multi-plug. the wire isnt too thin either.
-
tbh the human ear wouldnt hear any difference what ever wire you use to connect the speakers
-
Listen guys! The new door speakers are MID/BASS units.
They are being amped.
I wish to run speaker cable direct from the amp to the speaker!
I am certainly NOT having any joints or thin wires!
-
Took off the footwell kick panels today and had a good look!
What I want to do is quite feasible, only slight problem is its double skinned in that area!
Will also have to undo the door stay to drill. But should be straightforward.
-
Post up pics when your done mate.
I'll be rewiring my doors as well in a couple of weeks.
Would be good to be able to get a plan before hand as oppossed to going haywire with the drill & destroying something!!!
-
Yes I intend to take pics dont worry!
-
Well if Billy gets me the cable protection stuff like he said I should be doing this tomorrow!
-
News?
-
Job done and sounds fantastic!
Write up and pics in other thread.
-
as already said in here be brave and drill through the "spare" pins of the big conector it wont hurt any thing trust me just fitted a full set of focal components in front doors with crossovers and tweetwes on colums and had no trouble getting through just watch the vac pipes for locking and youll be fine ill get some pics up asap.......
-
drill through here
(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/HAIGHY2/DSC00178.jpg)
then other side
(http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/HAIGHY2/DSC00177.jpg)
then sit back and enjoy

Still dont see how you can drill that whilst its in the car! I mean the connection piece inside the door post!
-
if you put your hand up back of dash you will find you can remove connector at car side (not door side) aswell mate that way you can get just enough angle to get drill in...
sorry i didnt post a reply to solve your problem sooner , you still done a good job
-
Looking again at your pin connector I'm sure mine has more pins!
Will take a piccie and post later!
-
Here's a photo of mine!
This has a lot more pins than the other one shown and why I decided to drill metal!
-
Do the speaker grills fit back on Len?
-
Yes Adam!
didnt you ask that already? :undecided:
-
Big question is....does the grill go back on? Need ideas and have been looking at the ones you have bought for a wile.
The ones in the dash - yes
Door speakers TBH I didnt try fitting the grill but was no different to the current speakers so I dont see why not! Those front door grills are a pain anyway!
Not a definitive answer.
-
see the top middle of pic len , looks like plenty of room for an 8-10mm drill bit to go through??????
sorry i didnt post earlier to save you all this hassle but assaid before you still did a good jod..

So sorry Adam!
But its a definite YES!
As I said before I find those grilles and absolute pain anyway! So was no more difficult than normal to get them back on!

Well yes now with hindsight and being told that you can pull down the internal end to drill it!
But hey I'm more than happy with the job I did and it gives me capacity for maybe another set of speakers!
YES I may well have additional plans now!
-
nice pods for some 8" subs maybe?

-
Pod yes well possibly but the speakers I have produce quite enough bass!
So am thinking of another set of mid/tweets maybe? :undecided:
-
Im other way got my mids and tweeters with crossovers and thinking of pods for subs..... first one with good idea for NICE pods wins then lol
keep us posted mate
-
Well mine only needs to be small so will go where your crossovers are!
-
took me ages to decide where to put my crossovers, as anywhere else on door looks out of place, plus putting them where i did you only have to pull speaker corner of door card away and you can get your hands in to feed wires through without taking all door card off..... hope this helps mate...
-
http://www.talkaudio.co.uk/vbb/showthread.php?t=73733
seen this in another thread ...... might give it a go .......
-
Only got crossovers in the rear doors and just wedged down in the bottom of the door!
If I decide I want more Mid/treble I will make some temporary pods, without damaging the door cards and see first!
-
My crossovers are bolted to the back of the glove box. Absolutely shed loads of room back there & nice a close for short speaker wire runs to the doors.
I've also got my alpine ai-net box back there ontop of the the under glovebox storage. Seriously soooooo much space back there.
-
i dont see the point of buying nice looking crossovers and then hiding them out of the way?
-
Depends if you wanna drill holes in door panels I guess!
And I dont!
