Title: Hi all, looking to buy a mk5 GTI
Post by: GTI-Jamie on 20 April 2009, 18:28
I almost purchased a mk5 gti last week, but what put me off was it had high milege (85k),

what would be a realistic figure for me to need for a nice condition, low/average milege 2006-2007 gti ?

prefer to have leathers and exenon's

i dont really have alot of money due to being a sudent and have college everyday so dont have a full time job =[

but any help would be great, and anything to look out for when buying a second hand gti

thanks guys, Jamie.

Well i have 8k cash and the possibility of some finance to boost it up, i wont have no more than around 13

my insurence will be 4k just for a year, but i paid 3k a year for my old fiesta zetec s, so i dont mind, plus i get a years no claims in september.

but golf gti's are just so expensive and i doubt i can get a decent one for my money

13k is plenty enough to get a nice MK5 GTI.

Take a look on AutoTrader. I just found a 28 GTIs within 200 miles of me for between 11k - 12k.

Also, how much for the insuance !!!!?  You crazy students.

yeah but can i get a 56 or 07 for that as i want the manufacturers warrenty  :nerd:

and yeah gotta look cool lol, i pay it monthly and it works out to be around 300 quid so its not that bad,

but when you think of it 4k and you dont claim is just like giving the money away, which in that case is bloody crazy

well i been looking and i cant find no really nice ones that are near me

do you know of anything i should look out for when i view one? common faults or anything?

thanks mate

For that money (11k - 12k) you are looking at an 05 / 55 plate. Maybe the odd 06.

Take a look at this thread : http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=64432.0

There are lots of threads in here with regards to technical / mechanical problems users have had with their MK5: http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=59.0

I think you're nuts.

Take that money and invest in booze, pot noodles and febreeze like a proper student.

£300 a month on insurance?

That's bonkers mate. Even if you do get a 56 or 07 the warranty will have nearly ran out anyway.

£300 a month for insurance is the craziest thing I've ever heard. I pay less than that a month for financing £15k and to insure mine and it's not that long since I was a student.

Seriously mate I wouldn't bother, you're a student. Make the most of it whilst you can. You've obviously got a bit of cash anyway so in time you'll have a nice car. You'll spend enough of your life paying bills and having responsibilities. Go off on a gap year or something, but seriously don't spend £300 a month on insurance.

I also agree - thats far too much on insurance. Stick with a Zetec S or somet for a while!

When I first got insured (10 years back) in my own name, I also had a Zetec S, and was insured for £1400!!
That dropped pretty quick though - had the car for around 9 years, and my last insurance renewal on it was £315 ;)

I purchased the ED30 and expected insurance to again be very high. Its just over £800 now (fully comp etc), but Im OK with that TBH. I lost a few No Claims Discounts a few years back, and only have 3 at the mo. It'll drop over time as the discount grows, and as I [hopefully] keep my license clean!! lol
Next year when I renew Im aiming at around the £600 mark max.

I would never pay over £1k for insurance any more, no matter what.

As a student, you should enjoy life by socialising. There's plenty of time for fast cars later down the line, when you are stuck in bloody job, and have nothing to look forward to, apart from the drive home ;)

I bought my GTI, about 3 weeks ago, its an 06 plate with 23000miles, black manual, 3dr with 18" monza II alloys and was within your budget.

How old are you mate? Im only 21 and only pay £700 a year for insurance. £4000 is a serious amount of money, and your just throwing it away spending it on insurance. Have you tried adding your mum to your policy? They will usually bring it down. Or have you looked at how much to get insured on a Polo GTI?

But if its what you really want...

what age are you?

are we talking about uni / college student at say around 18?

if i were you and it was the case i would pocket the £4k per year on insurance for the duration of your uni/ college and that's roughly £12k in your pocket.

you mention you have another £8k, save that too and when you have finished studying you have £20k to blow and will get an awesome motor for that money

just get a cheaper car and build up your no claims with 3rd party insurance and save a little more!

hi mate, yeah im 18 at college, studing BTEC in construction  :smug: when next june comes i can get a job as a trainee and earn some good money, i am starting to think i should just save it, but i really dont like 1.2 or 1.4 cars, especially the 1.6 fiesta its a nice car and nice engine but the revs are high on the motorway and i drive on the a13 and m25 to get to college and it was abit annoying.

its hard when your young because you wana look cool and for everyone to notice you lol, but yeah i guess i probably will save abit more, but i dont reckon il buy a car until then, my girlfriend gets her punto (lol) this weekend and she said i can use it to go college and i have 2 wicked pedal bikes so i guess il just use them, got a road bike and mountain bike to choose from so there my motors lol.

you guys are very friendly i appreciate that, thanks alot, when i become a building surveyor in a few years il give ya discounts

I know how you're feeling mate, just dead keen to get in something nice.

A year will fly by and you'll only regret it if you end up getting something that isn't perfect now. In a years time you could probably pick up an 08 or something for about £13k now that the new one is on its way.

In the meantime make use the girlfriend as a taxi service with "extras"

yeah i will lol, its where i live aswell thats makes my insurence high, i live in east london and to insure at 1.2 for me wouldnt be no less then 2k,

i sold my zetec s erlier this month but i am going to pay the last 3 installments so i get my 1 years no claims bonus, it may not nock off the 900 quid but it will save me another year if i started again.

when i go up brighton my aunt lets me drive her audi tt convertible, i just wished i could take that to college lol its such a nice car.

and i know what you mean by the regretting it at the end of the year thats so true and you guys have pursuaded me not to buy one yet, lol first ever time i have been talked out of buying a car.

is it just me or does any one else think the front end of the new gti does not look as aggressive and sporty as the mk5?

thanks for the advice davoaj & everyone else, inc alan you have been a help

trust me, don't waist your money

i've seen many people spend alot of money on cars when young and then have to keep it etc.

i know what you mean, wanting to be cool etc.
so you don't like high revs annoying noise, go for something else.

how about a turbo diesel for now for the commute

save your cash mate 4k for insurance is a bit ott lol just wait a bit, i had a civic type r at 22 and was only £800 odd £300 a month my 11k car only costs me 275 and thats including insurance and gap insurance and payment protection etc £300 a month is rape lol

No worries mate. You won't regret holding out for 12 months, I always try to resist the urge.....

As for the front end of the new GTI, I know what you mean. At the moment I prefer the mkV but I always find that golfs grow on you. I can remember being unimpressed when the mkV GTI came out when I was in college in 2004 and not being too fussed. A year later I was obsessed!!

yeah i know what you mean, they do look better in real life, when i went to the showroom they had some normal golfs there and they looked very smart, but they said they wont have a brochure let alone a display car for the gti for atleast another 6 weeks

Yes, and I do too. God I was too busy at uni getting pissed, getting laid and having a laugh with my mates (well 2 out of those 3 anyway ;) ) to even want to think about spending 10k+ on a car, let alone 4k a year on Insurance LOL

But I didnt want to shoot the poor lad down (sorry to be patronising!)

Word of advice - be patient.... lots of time to buy a car that will impress :)

£4k! sod that. I got a saxo vtr at 18, then bought a civic type r at 20 and now have a R32 at 22. Never paid more than £1500 (CTR) for insurance. Saxo was £1000 a year and was a great fun car, looking back was not worth that much though, even though it was quick for my age.

Going off that i should be looking at RS4/M3 at 24

Just wait, maybe look at mk4 gti's for now, they wont drop much more in value so will be good untill you 20?

Are you out of your mind - 4k for insurance!!  You are either drug dealing on the side or robbing your parents if you don't have a full time job   Whats the rush to get a MK5 GTI - by the time you finish studying you will be able to get a bargain and not get raped on the insurance.  Its a nice car but not worth 4k insurance.  Get yourself a nice Mk2 or Mk4 instead - just as cool but sadly not as quick, which might be a good thing for you, your excess would probably be 10K

Exactly - the MK5 GTi is a nice car, but no way worth that sort of financial stupidty. In 2 years time there will be a another one, and then another one.

I sold my Z3 for 5k - you could have had that instead of buying a piece of paper from Direct Line :D

Everyway you look at it, it makes no sense whatsoever :)
