Hi all my 1996 8v has developed a dreadful clonking when reversing. im told its a damaged cog and an all to common fault. Plenty annoyed considering its only done 68k.
Now what I need to know is how to get it sorted. Is it a relacement gearbox job?? If so can anyone give me an idea of how much this is going to cost as ill have to get it done at a garage.
Secondly on returning from an 850 miles round trip the car now has an annoying tappety sound, just like my old mk2 had. How can I sort this as it sounds like an old banger!!!!!!

I got a mate with a 95 8v that makes a nasty clonking sound in reverse, think its a new gearbox jobbie. I wouldent bother though until it starts doing it in first and second. His is doing it on less mileage then yours and has done for last few thousand.
Re: Tappey sound: Have you checked your oil?

As I thought then a new gearbox.
Traced the tapping, it was a loose sparkplug causing the ht connector to tap against the block!!
Quick tighten up and its sorted, so is the sluggish lumpy performance, result!!!!!
