It's a 1996 Black Highline, totally standard, 3 owners, FVWSH and only 70,000 genuine miles. Want to add:
1. Full exhaust system (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=960QaGP7z5A&feature=related) PLEASE!
2. Suspension/lowered - Any suggestions ?
3. Wheels (anyone know what wheels are in the first pic of suzyGTI post back in 2006 - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=32871.30)
and any other essential mods I should get sorted immediately? I have about £1500-2000 to spend at the moment.
Cheers

Supercharger, lol.
But seriously, dont go over board on exhaust, as the engine sounds imense itself, dont drown it out with an exhaust. Maybe just a tasteful one to release some power.
Dont know about the wheels but tbh they look like halfords jobbies, lol.
Suspension i would personally go for coilovers as you can adjust them to suit the ride, handling, height, wheels etc. They start at about £150 budgets, and go up to over 2k a set!
-
What about wheels size, tyre profiles? What brand of coilovers do most use?
Where in England are the specialists?
Best magazines?
-
sounds like a great deal with those miles... enjoy it!

Magazines is Performance VW, or PVW, tescos sell it.
Most people go for Hottuning coilovers, they are only £150, adjustable to 120mm low, but no adjustable dampers so they do give a harsh ride. Mixed reviews really.
As for wheels, bigger than 17 and they wont work at all, most people advise 16's, with 17's and lowered it will scrub.
Standard wheels are 6.5j wide. Although 7.5 is comfortable, depends on what wheel you want really.
Tyre size, profile and make, depends on the width and size of the wheel, which is dependant on what wheels you want. But get it fairly low profile 40 or 45, and a size or 2 narrower than you are meant to, so it has a small stretch, and it will tuck into the arch when you lower it.
If you keep going lower you will need to remove the arch trims, or grind and fold the arches back.
Depends all on what you fancy mate.

Reference coilovers, use the hotuning ones excellent for the money to be honest, lots of choic with the wheels but be brave and fit something other than BBS.

6.5 ? What measurement is that? What width tyre?

Wheel width, tyres are 205/50/15 or 195/50/15's

Do you know where can I buy standard plain steel wheels from?

The mk3 is 5x100 Studs, so the mk3 and mk4 golfs have the same wheels. Have a look on ebay, or classfieds sections on this forum and edition38 forum.

If you can find New Beetle steel wheels they are 16".
-
Does anything in the VW range come with 17"

No not as far as I know, some Audis are available but will not fit.
-
Just spoke with VW main dealer. They confirmed the biggest in the VW range is the beetle at 16". £56 per wheel but he does'nt think they will fit? Audi said nothing comes with steels now. Was thinking a scrap yard!
-
Tyre width can go up to 215/40's on 17x8 wheels.
-
So basically just need to find a manufacture who has a vehicle within their range that comes with 17" standard wheels with 5 x 100 pattern...

You can get adapaters to fit other stud patterns, but this will effect the ofset and push it into the arch more, but that only matters if you go low enough to catch.
-
BMW do a range of 5 x 120 17" steels, just need a set of adaptors to reduce down to 5 x 100, £147 a pair !

Yes Beetle wheels will fit, have seen them loads of times.

Could pick some up 2nd hand if you keep an eye on the forums. I know people runing bmw wheels on mk4 ani's
-
BMW and AUDI only do 16" max, Merc use space savers....Even if I could find a 17" I would be looking at least £200 for a set plus £300 for adaptors - £500 or find a 17" with the same stud pattern which is proving to be difficult.
or I can just buy a brand new set of beetle 16" for £224...
-
I would go with the beetles, as you will find a 16inch rim nicer on a mk3 than a 17, can go lower, with no rubbing.
-
Yeah gonna do that.
4 x £224 from VW. They are 6.5J so I assume the widest tyre without banding would be a 205? Should I get slightly narrow though so they stretch inside the arches as gonna lower her at the weekend with a set of Hotuning coilovers.
If so how narrow a tyre?

Correct tyre size for 16" on a mk3 is 215/40/16, 205/45/16 or 195/45/16, I would pick 195's and then you have got a lot more room in the arch.
-
Cheers dude. What about 195/40/16?
-
Could do. Depends on brands available in the sizes. would look slick.
-
So apart from the wheels and suspension was thinking:
Hotuning decat pip
Hotuning Manifol
BMC CDA Induction Kit
But not sure about back box? That REAMUS one on youtube sounds mental?
Euro Performance sell a few different brands, any suggestions?
-
I am going to fit a Hotuning 6 branch manifold, but you must be careful, as they are from germany so you dont want a left hand drive one.
As for decat pipe, the come with a bore size of halfway house between an 8v and a vr6 exhaust, so it needs adapters either end to fit to the vr6 manifold and exhaust, even though it says its for a VR! (annoying i know)
I would recomend getting a full custom cat back if you are doing the mani and decat, as this will allow you to go lower and also mean that you wont be restricting the power you have unlocked.
As for back box..... up to you! lol
I made the mistake of a straight through custom from powerflow, no silencers. Way to loud, got annoying.
-
Hi do you mean get a custom made decat pip rather than buy the hottuning one?
-
Hey mike, you got a vr6, one you aint told us bout.....
If you get a 6branch mani you have gotta either uprate you mounts or get some flexi in your exhaust preferably at the base of the 6 branch....if not then in the decat (which i got from dubpower).
If you dont then your 6 branch will eventually crack, which happened to mine.
Alot of people advise heat wrapping them as they get bloomin hot and can melt stuff aswell as cracking also, although i never had a problem.
-
Powerflow will fit flexi between the cat/decat and manifold....
And as for VR6, there is hints alll over this forum... Work it out yourself! haha :P
-
Never looked under one of these before so not sure but does the standard exhaust come in 3 sections? Manifold, pipe with cat, back box? I have seen the hotuning manifold and straight through pipe? So does this mean i then just have to get a backbox and does eliminating the cat make it sound toooo loud?
-
You have the manifold, then a little bit of pipe to the cat, then after the cat you have more pipe going to the middle box or silencer then more pipe going backwards, over the axel and out to the back box.
Removing the cat wont make it much louder, its removing or changing the middle and back box that changes the noise.
-
so it is possible to have a straight through pipe starting at the bottom of the manifold all the way to the back box, thus eliminating the cat and silencer? So manifold, pipe, back box (3 pieces) ?
-

yes u can, i had this on my 8v gti, was very loud!!!!!!!
-
Can I buy the straight through pipe ready made from anywhere that I can just bolt straight onto the manifold at one end and onto the back box at the other end? Was thinking hotuning manifold, scorp or reamus back box.
-
I bought a ready made one, and it didnt go over the axel very well and knocked when i lowered it. So i got a custom straight through made, and has given no problems.
When i do this again im going to have a decat pipe, and maybe a miltek back box, then just get a custom exhaust place to fit a custom pipe between the 2, so that u dont get any issues.

When you fit a 6 branch, it bolts straight to the cat (or decat) and then come the rest of your exhaust. My vr had a straight pipe from the manifold all the way to the back box and sounded wounderful, although a little boomy at around 3000rpm but suprisingly quite above that while cruising down the motorway.

I added to my vr6 a induction kit
powerflow straight through centre section
magnex twin backbox and made 6bhp
from my last rolling road whent from 176bhp to 182bhp
looking at removing the cat now n a racing tubular manifold
