Evenin 'all
I've been lurking for a while gleaning information, but after much c*cking around going around the country to see 16 valvers that have ended up being molested, or dogs, I thought my chances of finding my dream unmolested car was going to come to nothing - then I found this:
'H' 1990
Only 73k miles (!)
5 owners
FVSH with all MOT's tax discs etc etc
Original Blaupunkt stereo
Original dealers sticker in the rear window and original dealer no' plates!
In short, it's flawless! The only non-original thing on it is some deadlocks on the doors, but does that really matter?!?
Now the crunch. I have commited to pay, ahem.... £4,600! (he was asking £5k) Have I just done something very stupid and bought a car with my heart simply because there is nothing else out there, or will it keep some of it's money?!?
Here she is:

P.s. Can anybody identify what grey is it?
I couldn't find anything specific in the paperwork or original bill of sale. It all just says "Grey".
-
id say it must be almost if not perfect, but around 4k is not unusall, only thing is i hope you love it like the previous owner dont get putting cheap parts on it or "bodging" it or anything like that or that 4k value could soon be 1K
is it going to be a daily? or a sunday toy ( the later will obviously be good for its mileage and condition )

Hi Dolly
You'll be pleased to hear it will be staying 100% standard. The appeal of the 16v to me is how it looks in it's original form. There will be no new alloys (the BBS's are perfect!), lowered suspension or exhausts or any mod tweaking. Like you say, as soon as you do things like that they fall in price, so I will also be using original parts if they need replacing at any point. I'm 31 and I remember in 1991 my parents neighbour came home in a brand new Oak Green 16 valver and I fell in love with it. I've wanted one ever since, so now I am downgrading (in price!) so I can buy my first home, I thought now would be a god time to fulfill that teenage crush.
It will be a weekend car with the odd commute during the week. :)
-
think the colour is atlas grey mate. ive just bought a 16v mk2 today in black and have only just stopped driving around in it  looks like a lovely example you got there matey.
-
Lovely car and colour, £4600 is only expensive if you are not happy with it
-
I suppose if you're happy with the price then that's all you need. Personally i'd never spend 4.6k on a mk2
Those deadlocks would really annoy me. No denying it's certainly tidy though
btw, the later grey cars are generally pearl grey. Open the boot and look inside at the rear panel. There should be a factory sticker with a load of codes on it, they tell you the engine, the trim, the options, paint code etc etc. Also a good indication that it's the original rear panel

Thanks for that - all being well I will be picking it up next weekend (not had time to get the cash today, and I'm busy with work this week), so I'll have a look then. :)
I'll be honest it looks a little lighter than Atlas cars I have seen previously, but that just might be the good paint's condition.

Once you have the codes you need to go to a site where you input what you have and it tells you what is what. I think the link is over on clubgti somewhere

I've been trying to register on ClubGti for over a week now, but I can find no way of getting my account approved. I registered, received the email which allowed me to activate the account, but nobody seems to approve it. I've emailed them 4 or 5 times (through the online form, directly, via the board etc), but nobody answers. So i've given up.
-
if your happy with the price you paid - then job done :afro:
if not, - then your MAD
-
proper mental. needs engine bay pics and underside pics.
-
Well you came to the right place for reassurance mate - I think thats a beauty!! Price is irrelevant, if you can afford it and its what you want then buy it. We only live once!!
It looks like Atlas grey to me though as mentioned it could be pearl grey.
So you had a Mk2 before then??
-
Funny that it's not got electric windows when they were standard on 90 spec 16v's.
I would say the price is high as i only paid half that for a near mint standard K plate valver with 82K on it.
-
The price is slightly high but then again mk2 gti prices are going up if you have not noticed.
I couldnt allow myself to spend that on a mk2 but its very nice
-
Wow thats a lot of money, but does look a lovely car but then i'd keep it as a show car then need to buy another for everyday use  lol.
Those deadlocks would drive me mad as i'd be convinced they'd start the rust worm off (water trap and maybe not treated exposed metal), plus metal shrads inside door slowly rusting !!
Was she a trade buy or private sale?
Did you see many how many, as for that sort of money you could have looked at a few esp at Vw Golf specific dealers (who are usually a little more expensive due to overheads etc) and chosen any colour trim, wheel combos.
Now i'll be thinking if I had £4600 to spend on a mk2 what would i choose ... probably 3 @ £1500 each lol
And as for you questioning your purchase, there's no need as in that pic shes priceless
Dave
-
^ my guess thats trade buy
-
proper mental.
The price or the car?
So you had a Mk2 before then??
Nope - I've always wanted one, but never got around to fulfilling my teenage crushes. There were two cars when I was a lad that I seriously lusted after, the 'Whaletail' 3dr Cossie, and a few years later the MK2 16v 'Big Bumper' Golf.
I've always promised myself I would own them one day, and this is me fulfilling one of the two.
Funny that it's not got electric windows when they were standard on 90 spec 16v's.
Interesting comment. I didn't realise that. It's got electric mirrors if that makes any difference? How did you spot that if the winders aren't shown in the pics?
The price is slightly high but then again mk2 gti prices are going up if you have not noticed.
That's what I'm kinda hoping. There seems to be a massive gulf for good cars and bad cars. A 'Good' car from what I've seen starts of at about £3.5k and goes all the way up depending on milage and condition. Regular high milers settle at round the £1500-£2k mark.
Was she a trade buy or private sale?
It's a dealer (Volkscars), who from what I've read on various forums is usually a little bit more on price, but does offer good straight cars and is good 'after' the sale should anything go wrong (?). I've been dealing with John, who seems to have been straight with me. He told me he paid £4k for it, said it's the best exmaple he's ever had and even at the high price could have already sold it time over if it weren't for people wanting to offer bad p/x cars (I've no p/x so I'm kind of lucky). He reckons original 16 valvers are getting harder and harder to find and in turn prices are going up (at least £1k over the past 12-18 months).
:)

v nice motor mate,i paid 4.5k for mine 4 years ago she had only done 35k,she's done 80k now.
i dont regret paying that kind of money as u are getting a car thats barely run in and ive had 4years trouble free motoring.
here,s mine at 80k now

I bought my 1991 mark II GTi 8 valve for £950, with loads of spare parts and a good history, 135,000 miles on it and a long M.O.T. Same colour as yours and think mine is Pearl Grey.
If I'm honest, I would have spent that much on a 16 valve model if I had that kind of money. But seeing as I don't and can't find a good one, will be saving for a VR6 Golf next. Then my mark II will be a project, probably restore it to factory new or something stupid, lol.
-
That wants to have no hidden nasties under the skin and to never had a re-spray at that price AND those bumpers want to be original.
I'd certainly want to see the build stickers on it before I handed over any cash for that money. If they're asking that much the car MUST be 100% original.
Personally I think the deadlocks are quite a good period extra - they would certainly be possibly fitted by the original owner - think about the context - at the time joy-riding was rife and insurance on things like Golf GTIs was sky-high.
If it's as good as the it's being sold as then you have a genuine modern classic, which is extremely likely to appreciate.
-
Also make sure everthing works including the heater, i'd also insist on cam belt change with tensioner using vag items, open bonnet and reverse a little whilst looking at engine if it moves ALOT then mounts need changing!!
£4600 is still alot of money so the above post is worth reading again as genuine paint is a must, maybe worth checking windscreen for leaks as usually runs into fuse box and sits in footwells which is nice..
Rear window for rust under rubber inside car, also worth popping off tailgate trim to see if number plate holes and the plinth has any rust, i'm sure seller would re assure you by showing you all this, as its still good money your paying and your not just buying the mileage no matter how low that is.
Just try to read up (using all forums available) on areas to look at when buying a 19 year old mk2 golf.
Im not putting a downer on this just not something you want to be going into blinkered esp being first one you've owned, i've had 17 and still miss silly stuff like i asked a one owner mk2 over the phone if he had ever had it painted to which he replied no never, travelled 120 miles and he was right it hadnt BUT it needed a bloody respray lol but i still bought it as im obsessed..
Bet we all wish we were coming with you just to all try to spot something so you dont have too at a later date..
Dave

Its probably pearl - my 1991 plate "grey" valver is pearl - Atlas grey changed over to pearl a bit before then.
As for your purchase - it looks mint, and if you keep it that way, I think you'll make money in the medium to long term. By "keep it that way", I mean prevent any rust from forming, so I would be looking into underside sealants, get the door cards off and protect inside there, wing linings, under the carpet. etc. etc. Also keep it clean and waxed (with a good wax e.g. colinite, not some off the shelf sh!t), and keep the platics and rubber protected (e.g. 303 Aerospace protectant - its only a few quid).
I would also look into an "Agreed Amount" on your insurance policy, as a normal policy would give you a tiny amount if you write-it off.
In terms of "have I made a mistake"... No! There are loads of very vocal people on here who have been lucky and got a minter for not much money, or who only paid £500 for their GTI, but in reality, without traversing the planet or waiting for months and months, you have to invest £££ to get something decent now (unless your one of the lucky ones).
You have paid well over the odds, but f##k it, its only money and at the end of the day you've still bought a fairly cheap motor comapred to some dullard who goes out and buys a brand new Toyota Yaris in Silver with a 14 second 0-60 for £10,000 or something. Plus your car is show-ready out of the box.
Enjoy it!!

Thanks for all the advice and kind words everybody - it's really putting my mind at ease. I just asked the dealer to take a pic of the datasticker for me, and here it is (I've blanked out the last few numbers on the VIN for obvious reasons).
Let me know what you think, or if there is anything worth noting:
Having noted what Diamond Hell said regarding deadlocks, I will be checking the original paperwork to see if they were dealer fitted. Fingers crossed they were!
As for wishing you could all come to see it next weekend before handing over the readies - I agree fully! Being new to MK2s I am very nervous about all this, but from what I've read on many forums I do have confidence in the dealer.
:)

The electric window switch's should be in the centre console
Electric mirrors are a option. Mine has manual mirrors but electric sunroof.
I would 100% ask the dealer to pop out both of the rear windows before i purchased it. The metal clips that hold the tops of the rear door cards in place rust and then rust the bodywork. Took them out on mine and there is quite a bit on the inside edge around the clips. Will be three both side. Also open the boot and lift the inside of the window rubber (bottom of window) and check for rust.
Both of these places are not checked by people and once the rust has started you only see it when it's too late. These are a true representation of the condition of the car.

Ahhh, gotcha. I thought all the sunroofs were manual. Another interesting fact, thanks! :)
I've just run the codes through the online checker on CGTi and to be honest not alot has come up! Not sure how accurate it is!

mine is atlas too! even after being told no its pearl
nice car mate and to be fair its only expensive if you think so, meaning that its what you wanted e.g. low mileage completely original with good coachwork and all this comes at a premium! hope your happy with it
-
makes yours sound cheap cookie  :afro:
-
Very nice car mate! I love to see clean, original examples like yours! Sometimes these catch my eye way more than a mk2 modded up to the eyeballs

The car is obviously a minter...But, before I would want to part with any cash, I would insist that the armoured door lock plate were removed for inspection, expect to find damage around the thick end of the door handle, as very often these were fitted, only to cover damage!!
Deadlocks would have to go as well!, theyre only there because an insurance company insisted on them!
If the doors were damaged, under the plates, and you got shot of the deadlocks, to bring it back to O/E spec, then expect to pay around £6/800 to sort out the job properly, also for that kind of money, I would get an independent inspection done, any cost involved, could be covered by re negotiating the price...peace of mind!
Tom

Thanks for this tip - I'm guessing these 'armoured plate's aren't standard, and if not how can you tell from the pictures that the car has them fitted?
-
Im not sure whether its Atlas grey, Ive owned both (The atlas got stripped and shell sold) My pearl grey looks a lot darker I would say.
LA7U is Pearl grey
Nice motor howeever!

Thanks for that. All the 16 valvers I have seen have had these plates, so I presumed they were standard - are they not? How easy are they to remove so that I can inspect?
Cheers
-
Good find although I would not part with that kind of money for one, that's Rallye money! But as they say, everything is worth what your prepared to pay for. Looks lovely mate.

If you open the door you will see a torx screw, remove that and the handle will then pull out, easy enough to do.
-
There should be a sticker in the boot under the boot latch or near the spare wheel which will have the engine code and paint codes on it... at least, mine does, give it a try.

But that's a J reg with a lot more miles. The one I have potentially bought is only £1k more for a lot less miles, with peace of mind that it's coming from a dealer?

There are 2 screws holding the door handle on.
One is just above the door lock close to the door skin.
The second is behind the chrome trim. Flip out the chrome trim and the screw is located on the front part of the handle.
Once the screws are removed push the handle towards the front of the door and now the handle can be carefully removed.
I paid £2,850 for my mk2 gti 16v. 82k from new with every bill and old mot. Not totaly mint but close and everything it needs i can do myself but more important on a rare k plate with last owner for 15 years.

Basiclay looked for ages and found this one localy off ed38.
Last one i got for £220 as a basket case and built this 20v mk2 in my garage over 2 years.

Lovely looking Mk2 dubvrs :)
Up for sale recently ... :(
-
Well I paid £3000 for my Oak green, G reg 1990 16V a few months ago.
It's an original 1 owner car with full history but done 156,000 miles. I have had a bit of paintwork done to sort out a bad repair on the passengers door, but other than that it is a very complete and genuine car.
I bought it from a specialist dealer, and probably paid a lot for it, but I could have taken days off work (unpaid) and spent loads on diesel going to look at half a dozen shoddy cars. That would have cost me much more than the extra I paid for my car.

-
Jeezus titty-f**king christ I had no idea that the price of gtis were so high!
When I first read this thread I thought you must be absolutely insane to have spent that amount on a mk2, but then I thought, to quote Rolls-Royce "The quality remains long after the price is forgotten." So good on you dude, hope you enjoy it like you deserve to!
I thought that car would have had to be a potential museum piece to justify that money (and by all accounts its by far the best one I've ever seen so it probably is), then I read what the others have paid for theirs and they still blew me away! £2,500-£3000?
I am genuinely shocked!
-
Hi,
Think the mint 73K 16v is still for sale, did you change your mind ?
cheers
-
did you change your mind ?
Hi - I've just not had the time this week to do any prep' e.g. HPI etc, and due to work reasons I can't make it up to buy it this weekend. For some reason the bank details he has given me to put the deposit in won't work (he said it's not the first time it's happened, but his bank don't know why!), so I've told the guy to put it back on sale for now until I have a free weekend to come up and properly buy. I can't see it flying out the door at that price!
From peoples responses here, it may seem that the car is a bit overpriced, so I'm in no hurry. I think I was buying with my heart rather than my head. I'll still buy it if it's still available, but in the mean time I will be keeping an eye out for something cheaper.
:undecided:

Indeed it does pay to wait sometimes and sometimes you have to go with your heart, don't worry about who's paid what for their's, the key is as long as your happy with the car and it's the one that ticks all the boxes in your mind, trust me I saw around 30 examples when I was search for one and I often kick myself even now for not buying some of the cars we saw first, all on the basis of waiting for that perfect example to come along..
-
I went to a dealer who had the choise of about 6 late Mk2's along with a few Corrado's. www.volkscars.com
I could have spent alot of time and even more money going to see dozens of cheaper cars, but I found him on pistonheads, and as he was only 3/4 hour away, I thought I would go and take a look.
The cars are honest, original, few owner genuine examples. Well presented but not at all tarted up. I bought mine knowing that it needed a bit of paint, but safe in the knowledge that it was a very good basis to build from.
