Title: Sportlines
Post by: mad_allan on 29 July 2004, 01:55
Hi all,

I am going to see a j-plate sportline at the weekend  ;D

Can you give me a few ideas of what to look out for when viewing please?
Also what are the paticulars of the sportline, engine size, 0-60 time, mpg, etc...

cheers

Another one that AdamB is going to be best answering (or eyeletboy come to think of it)  :) From a general cab point of view, check the usual stuff, make sure all the switches and electrics work, check power hood works, check hood for rips and make sure it fits tight, if it's rained recently check for damp carpets. Here's a good second hand golf buying guide to have a read of http://www.matey-matey.com/golf_buying_guide.shtml it's got a section on mk1 if you go through it.  :) Hope it goes well, if it's a good one and the price is right then buy it, you will not regret it  ;D

Sportlines will be 1.8 k-jet engines, 0 - 60 will be about 9 - 10 secs, if you want speed then don't bother looking at a cab. MPG will be about 32 - 35 on average :)

Sportlines are only really a trim difference, so everything that Gibby has said will apply to it. It should have the original recaro seats in it, and these do tend to wear better than standard seats. Check the electric roof is working fine, and make sure they give you the tonneau cover for when it is down. These have an extra flap on them, to disable the roof motor when the cover is on.
The matey matey guide is a good one, and should give you a good idea what to look for. If you want to start individualising a cab, then the sportline is a good platform to start from. There are only around 450 out there, so it isnt too common either.

Well I have just done a HPI check on the car and it is a cat D, Category D Insurance Loss. Vehicle Damaged But Repairable - Insurer Decided Not To Repair

Should I walk away?

Provided you are happy with the car, and the owner is aware that this is a cat D and is prepared to reflect it in his price, I would still buy it. Once you have it, you are unlikely to want to get rid of it anyway.

if i really liked the car i'd try and find out what damage was done.other wise i'd walk away.if your unsure leave well alone, there's others out there, just keep looking.but that's me,others may have a differant opinion.

chances are any cab you look at will have some faults it is after all over ten years old. dents and scratches, resprays on some.

if its a category D its had a good knock somewhere, if he is selling it for peanuts fair enough, repairable but more than likely more than the car is worth, plenty of sportlines out there depends on the price your willing to pay. there has been 4 with in the last 6 weeks on ebay and 3 rivages you should be able to pick up a good one in the papers.

if you cant get it fix pucka dont buy it. buy one you can sit in turn the key and drive and not worry about patching it up.

All the work has been done, it seems to be in good nick, i'm going to see it tomorro anyway and will decide then! He has is up for ?2k, which is ?1k under my budget!

I have the matey matey guide that i've read through and what to look for, was also thinking I should take a RAC or AA vehicle technician with me, what do you think?

I've been looking for a sportline for about 9 months now and this is the 1st one I have found for under ?3k. I asked you guys and gals as I wanted an outsiders view, cause I can be a little biased  ;)

This is going to be a slightly biased view, but for 2K, providing the RAC check it out, and confirm it is ok, then I would take it. You wont get a good Sportline for under 3 grand

Dont let your heart blur your vision into this car there are plenty out there and they aint all fetching silly money.

i only knew of a sportline after i bought mine, i bought the first one i saw ?2.5k on a H plate, caused a few problems and has cost a further ?1k to fix wouldn't want another version now as the plastic seats turned out to be leather and the buyer didnt know it was a gti.

few things to check though.

check that fuel pipe stick yer hand under the rear wheel arch and feel for the pipe at the top where it goes through and out the body infact take the fuel cap out and have a look inside, any rust hole either walk away or knock shed loads off.

operate the roof at least a few times costly if it goes down, if its weak at moving open the boot and make sure that the handle is set to the closed position on the electric roof mechanism, if its still jerky and very slow then its on its way out, check the MFA for all the read outs if a readout is not displayed the MFA is not damaged the sender is damaged or been removed, knock more off.

take it for a test drive and give it some stick from 1st to 2nd if you hear a grinding noise, the gearbox needs reconditioning, it wont get any worse but its a bargaining point.

get in the back off the car with the roof up and check around the rear window frame, lift the rubber and check for rust if there is it needs fixing otherwise in time your window will fall out.
outside looking at the roof where it meets the body the edge, roll it up a little it will move up a little enabling you to look underneath, look for rust all around here, its the point where the roof is fixed to the body if its damaged it is difficult to put right.

check the horn and the indicators, the washer wiper can stick as the contacts are crap on them.

Well I decided against the sportline, it wasn't in the best condition and wouldn't budge on the price!

However, I am now the owner of a 1990 (G) Golf GTI cabrio  :o

It has 99k, FSH, All old mots, new filler neck, new battery, new alternator, original pirelli wheels and 4 brand new tyres, dark blue in colour, roof cover for when it's down. Interior is immaculate and i've just finished fitting my stereo and CD changer, next up is the amp!!

Shame about the sportline, some people should really learn to take better care of things. But at least every cloud has a silver lining, sounds like you picked up a nice little gem in the end.

Some sellers really do crank up the price when it comes to special editions, selling off a special addition version adds ?500 to the value of the car if that. If its a bad one no fancy spec is going to save it, you did right to look elsewhere.

seen your photos, like the colour, most electric creature comforts i see, Mileage aint bad and above all some service history.
