Title: Pressurised Crankcase!
Post by: tenebrae on 17 April 2009, 13:22
Hello Chaps,
apart from a blocked breather pipe, or soft and collapsing (which is ain't) and I hope not piston blowby (gonna compression check it tonight) has anyone ever had a fountain of oil squirting out the dip stick hole on a digifant gti...? when under load.?

Just fishing for some quick hits and hints before I cry at the prospect of wondering what the chuff it is..

Anyone...?

Muchos

i would lookm at the mesh under the breather, this could be clogged and preventing the engine from breathing.

Sadly...no...but thanks for the reply..

I have an inkling...that the head gasket, which I have been intending to change for a while due to bit of leakage at the mating surfaces (lazy git me got the bits but was hangin about for better weather) might have a leak from the combustion chamber to an oil way...?  its just an hypothosis at the mo..  can't think of anything else beside blow-by...which I really don't want it to be..

Sigh.. pass me a 19mm spanner..

if you disconnect the breather pipe do you get excessive gasses from the PCV?
the oil ways are pretty tight to the combustion area so it is possible its blown thru into an oil way I guess, not sure what would happen if it did though, nothing good
either that or blow by like you say, i cant think of anything else off hand that would cause an oil fountain out the dip stick.

if it blown a pressuriese oil way to cylinder you get LOTS of smoke,   a return gallery it pressuriese the sump and will smoke on overun,

rings  it normaly smokes bit rarely pressurise the sum that much and you'll here the pistons slaping about ,    damaged  pistons and rings will do it tho

Thanks Guys,
compression was bang on in the green so no worries there, he says not overly confident..
Anyhow, the head is coming off...all thats left to do is get to those ever so lovely positioned
exhaust manifold nuts..   BUT...during the undo of said head bolts I found at least 2 maybe 3 of them
where rather easy to undo...not so torqued as the rest.
strangely enough in the same proximity as the leakage.me thinks the garage muppet who fitted the
last head gasket some 15k ago (before my time) neglected his mighty torque wrench.
So Danny P. me thinks your 2nd theory might be the biscuit, I'll know for sure once I've had a good
gander and stuck it all back together with another spangly head I have waiting for it.

Thanks for your help guys, hopefully this will be an end to the sad tale...failing that I'll be hunting down
a digi 8valve to slip in whilst I tinker with the broken lump.

It is possible to have reasonable compressions with broken rings. I have come across this myself twice. Look at the colour of the oil. If it has been recently changed, and it is pitch black already, then I would say you have a broken ring somewhere. If you have a jet of oil coming from the dipstick, then you have a problem somewhere.

Stuff it...rats and pish....

Oh well...think you might be right Dan...head swapped out, spangly gaskets..lovely...and....

..still spewing out the dipper..

thats several hours I'll never see again...!!

Looks like a 2nd hand engine is on the too buy soon list, what a total fecker..!!!

I'll be beating the old engine with a sledge hammer as revenge post swap..

grrrr....why can't things be easy..

Thanks again!

Gonna check a few more things before the engine removal job..sigh..

Just a question, never having removed gti engine, can it be done without having to hoist the gearbox out as well?

I've been fortunate in my past gti lifes having had sound engines before this one...sniff..pass the kleenex..

Hints?

it can, just need to support he gearbox from underneath. i imagine it would be a bit of a mare though, personally i'd just take it out complete.

the quickest and easyest way is dafantly remove the engine with the gearbox on,    that also means you can fit the gearbox to the new engine on the floor whitch takes about 30 seconds wheas is can take a while in the car espectaly if working on own

Think you are right guys,
I've been eyeing up the space to the right of number one and there aint mucho space to do the sideways shift..

But.. back to the original problem, the weirdo thing...after fettling off the old head, swapping over the intake and manifolds and the associated gubbins onto a swanky rebuilt head, fitting that and then finding I still had squirty oil desease....(I only tested it once for about 3 miles..then succumbed to tears) I went to bed, new engine in mind..

The next day...today...!

I gingerly drove to the car shop keeping it about 2k revs, got a new oil filter..and there was no oil leak ...took it to 2-3k on the way home...bugger all...went for a rip around the block...no leaks...naff all gone...vanished.. just came back from a 20 miler and zip...nothing zilch...leak gone.

A fecking mystery...unless my car healed itself..or indeed the head did sort it and it was just some residual crap flinging around just to pish me off..

I'll keep my eye on that little bugger for sure but for now, since betsy (my gti) runs like a peach I'm gonna leave her be.

Thankee kind chaps for your wisdom and learned views...all was a help!

Rick
