I've just read that these are now available, does anyone have them and what are the differences to V3? I'm thinking of purchasing them but wanted to know the differences before parting with cash.
-
Would be interest to know what the difference is too?? Anyone know who they are made by??
or more importantly if there are any torrent sites on the case :lipsrsealed:
-
correct me if im wrong but it has 5 digit postcode search also upto date maps of the uk. i think these new discs are encrypted so they cant be copyed and burnt to another disc. Also the makers are blauplunk these discs are major money aswell.

Im not sure if I am allowed to mention where but the torrent site currently high profile on the news has it. To be honest after paying so much for a V3 I dont see why VW dont allow a free upgrade, or at least a significantly reduced price!

Is the RNS 510 the standard DVD sat nav in the Mk5?
Sorry no mention in my manual on the model number :(

I think there is another sat nav unit in the MK5 also - the RNS510 was the upgrade to that, and is the current top range OEM system.
One of you guys that has the RNS510 - sell it to me!!!
-
I have this one:

I think there is a new DVD out for this, but £150 a pop!

The original DVD Sat Nav for the MK5 (as below) was the MFD2.

The new one is the RNS 510 (below) as most of you know about, DVD Nav installable to 40GB HD, SD Card reader.

The RCD510 (below) is basically the RNS510 but with a lower resolution screen, no satnav and no hard drive. It does however have the SD Card Reader and builtin 6CD Changer.

not sure what the differences are and am reluctant to upgrade just for the heck of it.
-
synnea - many thanks! Thats cleared that up
(nice to see the map on the examples is of my area too :) )
Is it worth upgrading the RNS 510? Is it even possible to?

Sorry to hijack your thread......
-
no probs.
-
yes!!! Its a simple swap. The RNS 510 is a cracker unit. You can install the map onto the HD, and the whole touchscreen menu system works a dream. You can also watch DVDs on it (while stopped).
You than have about 30GB to store MP3s, plus MP3s on your SD Card. I have one going up onto ebay next week so keep an aye out for it. When I was fitting it I stupidly broke off the clip that holds in the GPS connection but with a bit of insulation tape it holds fine and works perfectly. Ill be putting that on the along with photos and a full 14 day money back guarantee if the winner wasnt happy with it. Its version A one from my MK5 GTI which I sold a few months ago and in as new condition (apart from the clip). Screen is 100% unmarked.
I honestly cant recommend them enough. If you need any further info on them just let me know.

Right well i need to know what the difference is before I spend ages trying to get myself a copy....
will report back later!! :nerd:

I got a V4 map off torrent site, as yet i haven't installed it as I am trying to edit the POIs to add in speed cameras.

V3 already has the speed cameras....
-
Ok from what I can gather it has something called nav companion... which allows you to import addresses from the SD card. Apparently its quite useful as you can use google maps to find exactly where your going then import it into the 510.
not something i would ever be ar$ed to do if im honest.. i would rather just drive round like a proper bloke familiarising myself with my surroundings
-
V3 only had speed cameras if the the disc was hacked.

ahh haaa  thats the one i had then... cant see the real benifit of upgrading unless it offers the full postcode input. Seems to do everything else I need it to do
-
Well the maps are a year more up to date!

true.... not many new roads about where I am anyway. The government should maybe concentrate on fixing the ones they have :lipsrsealed:
-
i have noticed that a section of the A2 and also the A55 seem to confuse the V3 maps due to new bypass sections being built recently. oh well I can live with that for the time being until maybe V5 comes out with full post code function.
-
Do new versions come out once a year, or whenever VW feel like it??
Also (sorry, slightly off topic), I understand the RNS510 has postcode search and has speed camera locations built in?
Finally, does it take you to a particular door number, like Tom Tom does, or to the road only?
-
it takes you to the door number. Speed cameras are not included in the standard version from VW, however many people have managed to add the speed camera information to the dvd. This is quite difficult to do if you are not very computer savvy. In regards to the frequency VW issues updates, I have no idea, sorry.
-
map frequency is upto Navteq who manage the maps, but yes it is roughly once year.
