Title: Quiet 8v exhaust... any recommendations?
Post by: tony_ack on 16 April 2009, 14:14
I currently have a loud, rude DTM exhaust fitted to my 8v Digi. It's way too loud for driving around town, and deafening on the motorway, so I'm looking to replace it with something nice and quiet that will allow me to hear the beautiful sound of the engine!

I've just rang my local VAG dealer to get a price for a full VAG exhaust, but I was told that VW stopped stocking them a couple of years ago, and only the backbox is available. I'm really disappointed, as in previous threads it's been suggested that the full VAG exhaust is normally very quiet, but really brings out the right notes (subtly!)under load.

Can anyone recommend a quiet system that sounds pretty close to the OEM exhaust? Is there some kind of mix and match of the VAG backbox and an aftermarket mid and front section that works well?

I know that GSF do a couple of different exhausts, but I'd be a bit reluctant to go for them.

Many Thanks!

Euro Car Parts?

Just an idea, I usually get mine from local dealers, Andrew Pages to be exact.

A 3 silencer Supersprint system is more or less factory sound, even the 2 silencer version is pretty quiet compared to Jetex, Magnex, Scorpion etc

The supersprint parts also fit perfectly with oem parts, so you could have a supersprint front and mid section with a VW backbox. I had that on my 8v and loved it, although i'd say the car pulled a little more up the top end with the full supersprint system, but that may well have been in my head

thanks for the quick replies!

I've used Page's, and other local suppliers before. The quality tends to vary - I remember years ago fitting a full exhaust from Andrew Page's to my first car, which lasted about 18 months. I got another from another local supplier, and that was still in excellent condition when the car was scrapped two years later. I've also heard bad things about the quality of GSF exhausts, although I did notice that they supply a choice of 'cheap' and 'quality' part.

I've had a look around for Supersprint stuff, but I haven't found much so far for the MK2 8v - their UK website doesn't have full systems, or the mid-silencers. Also, I saw that the back box was £225 (!) on its own, compared to the VW one at £79.80 inc! Any idea where I will be able to find the mid/front sections with silencers?

Ive got a jetex 3 box system on mine atm, its definetly quiet im tempted to replace one of the boxes with a bit of pipe. Only thing about the jetex is that it is a bad fit but not impossible to get right, also they only have the massive twin 80mm backbox style

I have a similar issue, actually I have loads of issues at the mo! (see 'this is going to be bad isn't it.....')

I currently have an after market Jetex twin which came on the car and it is ferociously loud, offec=nsive if i'm being honest.

I did manage to procure an original 8V back box that had never been fitted to a car for a tenner!!!  Do you think it would be possible to slave in the original back end onto the jetex?

Let me know when you resolve this Tony and what configuration you chose, would be really helpful.  Thanks guys

Just fitted a complete powerflow system for 270.   Sounds excellent, not too loud at all and the backbox is preety close to oem ( just exits straighter)

if its a standard car go for an oe vag system. mine cost me £170 with my club gti discount. it lost me power on my 2.0 bvh motor, but was deadly silent. i liked that

if its a motor with a little work, go for the jetex. its defo quieter than the milltek i had on, now that was offensive!
it also gained me response, so that must mean torque/power. on the drive home after fitting i could instantly tell it was quieter and quicker.although i just hate the tailpipe. mine fits perfectly as it got fitted by a dealer

i was going to go for a piprewerx system, but it worked out £110 more expensive, plus £40 petrol, and 8 hours waiting around

Mines a bit of a hack, I've got a standard downpipe, powerflow centre and scorpian mid and back - I think. Won it for £15 on eBay, can't argue with that for a stainless steel exhaust!

I'll record it for you later on today.

Okay, I think I know what I'm going to do.

Paul - I'd love a full VAG system, but unfortunately VW don't stock them any more - just the back box.

I think I'm going to go for the VAG back box with a GSF front and mid silencer (the better quality ones). I'm hoping that the exisiting downpipe will fit in okay - if not, then I'll have to look into that too (I'd rather not, as they're 89+Vat).

I would consider a supersprint 2-silencer mid section to go with the VAG backbox instead if I could find one, and the price was reasonable.

Thanks for the advice - I'm going to wait until payday, so if anyone else has any suggestions, feel free to put them forward!

Have just ordered a back box and mid silencer from VAG. The guy said all the exhaust sections are now obsolete, and VAG only have four of each of the rear and mid silencer sections left in stock (three now!). All other bits are out of stock and discontinued. So get in quick if you want them!

Find it so depressing that so many parts are now discontinued or indefinately out of stock.

Budget ?

Budget was £300, but so far the backbox and mid silencer have come to £130 (inc). I think I may stick with the existing downpipe if I can - I can't see it adding much to the noise level

You'll need a subwoofer (or semi decent speakers) or you won't hear much ;)

Though if I had the choice, I'd have this sound coming out my car - I love this exhaust tone!
