Title: diesel/petrol gearbox is the much diffrence?

Has any one here actually run a petrol gearbox on a diesel?  I need to get a cable change box for my MK3 TDI and finding it easier said than done,  I know the 16v box would fit but im worried about the ratio, they are much shorter i think,  would it really make it a pain to drive?
