I personally hate modified cars, just one of those personal things - I am a standard "freak" :)

But that is lovely, no denying it at all.

Sex.

Apart from the headlight brows and the 5 doors I'd go as far as to say perfect, love it.

Nice car, but lose the Edition 30 badge. If it's a not a genuine Ed30, don't badge it as one. Sorry, but badging cars as something they are not is a real pet peeve of mine.

It looks like one, has the same turbo and 330bhp! I know what you are saying but its not like a 1.4 dressed and badged as a gti/R32. That really peeves me off (sadly lol)

Besides...Its not as if VW didnt cheat you out of the special edition thing anyway... They over produced... By a couple of hundred...

Besides that the car is in South Africa. We didnt even get a sniff of an edition 30 or a pirelli. We only got a couple of .:R's and to be quite frank its not as if everyone in SA has a badged Edition 30. Let the guy have his fun.

His car looks great and has everything an Edition 30 has. Except the interior... Big dealio...

Agreed. However, the Ed30 is (or at least was supposed to be) a limited edition car and the OP's car is not an Edition 30 so I think badging it as such is a bit silly.

Anyone who knows about GTI's will be able to tell on close inspection that it's not an Ed30, i.e no red stitching in the cabin, different seats etc..

Granted, he's done some serious mods to the car and 330bhp is very impressive, but the fact remains he is trying to pass the car off as something it's not. That's my only issue with it.

lol!

South African Dealerships look at you funny when you say edition 30... Nevermind the Pirelli.. When I asked if they had Pirelli GTi's the guy took me to the workshop and showed me a tyre  :lipsrsealed:

Besides... Funny how everyone complains that he badged it as an ED30 but nobody has issues with those that take an edition 30 and change the styling, seats and engine parts... Its a bit hypocritical as far as Im concerned.

Very nice car - but I also think the badge should go.  Not for the same reasons as the others though.  I just think it takes away from the look of the rear of the car.  I prefer the cleaner look of the rear with just the GTI badge.  Even if I had a ED30, I would remove the ED30 badge.  I don't care what people think it is - just as long as the car looks as cool and slick as it can.  But ETTO as always.

Somebody said on here before that the ED30 badge looks too like the Ford TDCI badge, and I think that's really true!

Well that's something completely different and not at all hypocritical. Those people are not trying to make their car look like something else and then badge it as if it's the real deal.

If I had the old V8 S4 and got the engine tuned up to 400bhp+, and put an RS4 exhaust on it with the RS4 body kit, would it be ok for me to re-badge it as an RS4? I don't think so.

Is there a moral code in car modification? :D

Modification is all about making something look better than it really is, I think putting a badge on a car describing it as something else is a bit silly - agreed, but not something to get upset about.

I unfortunately dont understand how that is different?

You have bought was is "classified" as a limited edition car and surely if its a special edition you shouldnt be changing things on it? Some people have sold the pescaras. Some have changed the rear ends to .:R32. Some have ripped out the seats and replaced them. When they sell these cars they will not be original limited edition. Therefore they shouldnt count as limited edition vehicles. Would you rip apart an original MK1 and change it completely? No you wouldnt (Unless restoring it). So then why is it acceptable to change things on an edition 30?

And yet nobody fusses when people change bonnets, exhausts and the like... But when someone puts a badge (You can even buy the placque from a known supplier now) that is readily available online onto a GTi that is more edition 30 like than most of the modded edition 30's on here everyone throws their toys out of their cots?

In essence you guys are complaing that he is branding his car as something that its not. Well when the ED30 was launched they said it will have colour coded bumpers, pescaras etc etc. When you change the pescaras on an edition 30. You rebrand the car. Its all the same thing.

If anything this guys car is more limited than the edition 30 is as its the ONLY GTi of its kind in South Africa. And then of course you dont know why he has the badge. Perhaps edition 30 relates to the fact that his GTi has over 300hp? There are not a lot of GTi's in SA that have this.... Why do certain members of this forum judge so quickly?

Im not getting upset because he stuck a badge on his car. Personally I couldnt care. Its how trigger happy people are on this forum to judge and how you guys get so twitchy in your ultra limited, ultra cool and for those that want bigger heads I mention again the word "limited" golfs.

Im done ranting now

He could badge is as a Ferrari if he likes.

Given he basically has an ed30 under the skin as well as looking like one - whats the problem?  He doesn't have a plaque of course but I'm sure and sign writer could manage that

As Micsta says, given that the ed30 doesn't exist in SA it really is a non issue.

I unfortunately dont understand how that is different?

Ok....I'll explain it once more...

I have no problem with anyone modifying any car, in what ever way they want. What I do think is juvenile and tasteless however, is someone trying to pass their car off as something it is not. That is the issue I have with it.

You have bought was is "classified" as a limited edition car

Nope, I don't have an Edition 30 - just a regular run of the mill GTI. :embarassed:

surely if its a special edition you shouldnt be changing things on it? Some people have sold the pescaras. Some have changed the rear ends to .:R32. Some have ripped out the seats and replaced them. When they sell these cars they will not be original limited edition. Therefore they shouldnt count as limited edition vehicles. Would you rip apart an original MK1 and change it completely? No you wouldnt (Unless restoring it). So then why is it acceptable to change things on an edition 30?

You appear to have missed the point. I don't think I ever mentioned anything about those who modify a limited edition car. I've been talking about people who try to make their car look like a limited edition car and then badge it as one. You're the one who has brought up this thing about people modifying limited edition cars. I never mentioned it. Again, for the record, I don't care what anyone does to their car, limited edition or not. The distinct difference here Mike, is that those who modify their ED30's are not trying to pass their car off as something it's not. Do you see the distinction?

And yet nobody fusses when people change bonnets, exhausts and the like...

No, and why would they? I certainly don't.

In essence you guys are complaining that he is branding his car as something that its not.

Now we're getting somewhere.

Well when the ED30 was launched they said it will have colour coded bumpers, pescaras etc etc. When you change the pescaras on an edition 30. You rebrand the car. Its all the same thing.

No you don't rebrand the car when you do any of those things. You have modified the car. That's all.

Ah Mike, come on now. That's clutching at straws to try to justify it. The car is not an Edition 30. End of.

Im not getting upset because he stuck a badge on his car. Personally I couldnt care. Its how trigger happy people are on this forum to judge and how you guys get so twitchy in your ultra limited, ultra cool and for those that want bigger heads I mention again the word "limited" golfs.

And I really couldn't care less either, but the guy posted up pictures of his car to get some feedback on it. I gave mine, and indeed I complimented him on the car. I think it looks well, but made the point that I thought the ED30 badge was a bit naff and that the car would be better without it. It was only when yourself and others engaged in debate on the issue of badging that I responded with my 'tuppence worth. I really didn't want to post on this thread again, but your last post was so wide of the mark and seemed to miss the point that I and others had made, that I had to jump back in.

Anyway, I'm done now as well.

I think you're forgetting that this car is in South Africa - the tints may not be illegal there...  Plus while the comment re BMW drivers is certainly valid here in the UK () it again, may not be the case in SA.

First off the cops in SA have Gti's as chase cars... And yes I have seen two that have been modded we even have a modified R20 or whateva they are called Renault Meganes with tirts that are darker than the black of the cars paintwork. Secondly they dont give a darn about tints at all. As their own cars have them... its called smash and grab tints.... Its what saves a lot of peoples lives here. Thirdly his car has xenons... Even with tints he is emmiting more energy than you brain does than the standard halogens

Sigh Mr Sharpie... You never learn. (But still remain somewhat funny)

lol...i dont get why you guys are upset over something that is so small...
