Title: Grinding whirring road noise... £400 later and still not fixed.

Im very annoyed!!!  I went into quick fit to get new rear tyres and have them check a wheel bearing, He pointed out my front alloy was Very buckled and the wheel bearings seemed fine,   I needed 4 new tyres so with there being no point in putting them onto buckled alloys i though i would fit 4 nice new alloys wheels,  this would fix the noise (caused by the buckle) and thats me sorted... But no its not that simple.   its still making a loud hollow sounding whirring grindy noise, but as soon as a move the steering wheel slightly to the left, it stops, not totally but it does a fair bit, the seccond it hits straight again it comes back, it doesnt take much of a turn to stop it though.

So i need your thoughs,  CV joint or wheel bearing? Where do i go next?

Id say check CVs next, maybe rubber boot has split+ one has run dry, if steering affects it then i would gues it was an outer one, might be able to tell from jacking it up and feeling for roughness.

I didnt know track rod ends would cause that sort of noise?   Its not a heavy grind or anything, its very fine vibrations,  but saying that i think it might be getting worse and more grindy with it,  I will pop it all off in a bit and see what i can find.   :cry:

I have had it all checked out again.  heres the worrying results.

Rear engine mount,  gearbox side is totally knackard.

There is a humming/ringing noise from the diff and the grinding whirring noise is from the gearbox.  :cry: :cry:

So once again the typical weak gearbox has let me down.    :undecided:

Yeah if its more a vibration may well be track rod balljoints boing worn out and vibrating because of excess play, Easier to replace though than CVs as well!! Check them for play by just tugging on them or get someone to turn the wheel whilst watching them to see where the play is!!
