Title: coming back to the GTi - Diesel or petrol?
Post by: OutlawStar on 13 April 2009, 20:00
Its been just over a year since i wrote my golf off now, and I think i'm ready to rejoin the Gti club! i know exactly what i want 2001, AUM, ko3s, recaro seats etc

My only problem is that i've never experianced a Diesel tdi or gt tdi....are they faster, slower, louder?? can anyone give me an honest answer and should I be considering them as well as thier petrol counterparts?

cheers!

haha i've seen that chart in a load of other threads

so the derv has more torque? i'm going to have to give both a go i think to remind myself! i've been in an audi a4 1.8t for a year so my concept of speed is totally warped! I was thinking S3 but i've got a major soft spot for GTI's and have some unfinished business with them! plus this is the best forum on the net!

yep diesel has more torque but less BHP plus its got a narrower power band

its all down to how you drive to be honest - if you do mainly motorway miles than the diesel might suit you better as you'll always be in the power band for overtaking etc

best bet is to drive both and make your own mind up - each has their pros and cons

Need to try both mapped TBH

If you dont do many miles and can afford the petrol then why not get the AUM

Yes, the DERV has a lot more torque, but it's over before it begins, LOL! :D

All that constant gear changing would do my nut in!

You know the S3 makes sense! 8)  (You'd still be welcome on here!  :D).

 this topic is a hard one as everyone loves thier brand! tbh i onky drive around town and a few national speed roads, so maybe petrol again, but im open to new things so i will try both  before i make my mind up! S3's are great but are alot more cash, you do get the ko4 + quattro, but with my budget i'd be looking at a highmiler, and if i hadnt of had the crash last year i would still be in my GTI!

Im going to arrange some test drives! no matter what i get im really looking forward to driving a GTi again!

If your not doing many miles dont bother with the diesel, buy a mint 1.8T

They're both great Mk4's, mate, so don't really think you can lose, either way. :)

1 thing I would say, though, is if you do under 15k pa, then I would go for the GTi. ;)

Hey, the quicker we get through the fossil fuels, the quicker they'll bring out the mass production hydrogen powered hot-hatches! :D

What's your budget/criteria, IYDMMA?  I'll have a scout around for some S3's for you. :)

well for an s3 my budget would be max 7k, looking for a facelift 225bhp model with black interior, standard alloys and chrome mirrors, not in red, green or hibiscous red!....but as i said thats my max and would have to save up a bit more for the insurance as its alot more then the golfs! I could have a much nicer golf with my budget so i may save the s3 for my next car and have a bit of fun with a really good GTi!

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=76924.10

sorry for the link i dont have any other pics of it anymore!

an anni could be an option, although i like the idea of having a car like i did before and a bit of cash to play about with it!

how much are r32's these days i think my insurers would laugh me off the phone!

R32's start at about £8k for a non V-car, IIRC.

What's your max mileage?  There's a nice Midnight Blue '02 S3 on AT for £5,950 with 87k on the clock.  Looks very clean, but needs a HPI, obviously. ;)
