Title: is it ok to clean the pressure reg valve?
Post by: difficultrogue on 13 April 2009, 11:36
Had a few hours to spend on the 8v gti -when cleaning the throttle body I noticed a split in the breather that runs from the reg valve down in to the front of the engine, the reg valve was caked with grease is it safe to clean it out or would you suggest buying a new part? & are these VW main stealer parts or do gsf or others sell these parts?

It should be fine to clean it!  the plastic pipes tend to split though to be carefull with them.   I would use brake and parts cleaner, it evaporates fast and breaks grease and oil down.

My Front breather pipe is split too but i think they are like £40 from stealers so might be better goin to scrappy, not 100% sure of price but i get rough prices off ETKA which seem to be quite accurate still
I cleaned out the plastic valve on the valve cover too, i took it off first+ sprayed it with brAke cleaner to break up these big lumps of dried out oily greasy crap

VW wanted £42 last month for this breather!!!

Found a mint one at scrappy in Nottm for £3!
and it came attached to the rubber housing on top of the engine.

Podders at Mapperly top had 3 mk3s in the other month, all look ok and full of bits.
