ive been saving and searching for a mk 4 for a while now, and after a few insurance quotes on the internet, i feel that i could afford to run and insure a 180 bhp gti, so i was just wondering if that would be the better option, as i plan to do quite a few mods anyway, (r-tech remap, fmic, forge recirc etc) so is the extra power worth it?? and are there any common problems with the 180s?
-
The 180s are the same thing, just have a different map from the factory to give more power.

With a six speed box

Buy 150 AUM IMO.
It will map the same as a 180 AUQ 210 - 220 bhp

would i be able to use the liquid gauge with all its functions with the AUM??

Their is a lot more to think about than 150 or 180bhp when buying a car.The AUM came in 150,but will map to the same power as the AUQ,the AUQ came with bigger front breaks and a 6 speed gearbox but no Recaro seats(unless you buy an anni).
Personally id want Recaro seats(vw sport seats are crap),but you could allways buy a set and put them in the AUQ.
How's that helped in making your mind up
Budget also comes into play.....

Front brakes are easy to upgrade should you want to. just need carriers and discs.
Didnt vw stop using recaro seats from 2000> patch?
Loads of engine info here : http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=89491.0

The 180bhp comes with 6 speed box as said above, plus the 312mm from brakes and vented rears.
As for Recaro seats, don't quite know how that comes into play?? They stopped the recaros as standard in post 2000 cars. The spec of the 150bhp and 180bhp is the same apart from the above.
The 180bhp Anniversay is a unique spec, but same running gear.
If you can afford a 180bhp and indeed if you can find one, then go for it however they all map to the same anyway....

Also however nice a 6 speed box is , it will be lots more $$$ if need replacing
Something else to think about :undecided:

Cant do the cheap G60 VR6 clutch upgrade with the 6 speed box either.

Yup rich the recaro situation is a strange one becos i have an 2001 on a 'Y' and mine has full recaros in lol

It was 2001 when they stopped fitting them, early AUM's got them.

didn't they become optional extras? :undecided:
though thinking about it it could be yours is an MY01 build - VW start producing the next model around June time so if its registered / built before June there's a good chance it will have the Recaro's fitted
Dai's donor motor was registered in March 01 and had Recaro's and very nice they are too :smug:

Exactly, its not the "reg" date but the "build" date that is important!
Isn't the 6 speed a stronger gearbox which is why they were fitted to the diesels??

not sure about the gearboxes - always thought the 6 speed was for economy purposes :undecided:
being totally honest i think the 5 speed boxes have better ratios; i find the 6 speed in mine too close and end up short shifting most of the time

Know what you mean on the short shift... I usually use 1st, 2nd 4th and 6th. Rarely use 5th if ever.

mines a 01 on a 51 plate but model year02 apparentley and i didn't get recaro's   would'nt mind some tho

would the standard clutch last if i was to have the car remapped, exhaust etc???

depends on your driving style and the clutch's current condition to be honest - some will last the lifetime of the car - some will last about 1000 miles!

ahhh right, something to think about whilst saving i suppose lol, do you think an AUM 1.8t would be the better option??

they remap to the same power so quite possibly yes though you may find the later 180's better specced as they were the last MKIV's off the production line
swings and roundabouts really
my advice is find the best one you can afford - make sure its been looked after and all the relevant servicing performed; just because its newer doesn't always mean its better if you get what i mean

yeh makes perfect sense, thats why im saving that bit extra, just waiting for one to come along with f.s.h and a higher spec etc got a good friend who works as a mechanic for v.w so hes gonna come along when i see one i like lol

last year i had a AGU on a W plate and after a Remap the clutch lasted 24 hrs MAX *was biting high b4*
Hopefully my 02 plate AUM will give me a bit more life when i get it mapped
