Title: no boost

just bought my 1st vw. its a mk4 2001 gti 1.8t. as ive never had one before i dont really know what power to expect. when im drivin it doesnt seem to be any pull in it at all, ive owned turbos before and usually you can feel it pull and you can hear the turbo spin but with this golf theres nothing. could it be a knackered turbo?
