I popped into VW today to ensure I was on their database as the registered owner of the car - so I can get my plaque etc. They couldnt get on the system so took my details and a copy of my log book and said it would be done on Tuesday, which is fine by me.
I asked how much it would cost to have the colour coded rear parking sensors added, and they told me that they dont add aftermarket stuff. They have a outside person who comes in to fit and modifications. He's not available on weekends but they gave me his number and told me to give him a ring for a price etc.
Apparently he is VW certified, and all parts he uses are original VW parts. I can either take the car in to have the job done, or I can ask him to just come round to my house/work and fit the part there. It wont affect the warranty on my car, and the parts he adds will be covered by a 1 year warranty by VW.
Does this sound OK? I had assumed I would go in to a VW garage and they would do it themselves - not have an aftermarket person who specialises in this stuff?
I only want the rear parking sensors added for now, should I go ahead, or should I go to another VW dealer further away?
-
If VW are happy with his work get him to come to you'r house.Should be cheaper.
-
I'm sure its not strange for dealers to work differently. You know the score with mine mate with the dealer in Lowestoft and I also had a price of the dealer in Norwich.
-
As mentioned, different dealers work in different ways.
Some will happily do aftermarket stuff (my dealer offered cruise control and parking sensors as optional extras they'd fit on a second hand car). Others won't. Almost all will have someone they use for specific jobs like bodywork, alloys etc.
-
The Volvo dealership that my dad's mate owns does the same thing. The outside guy has installed stuff on my dad's Volvos before and it has always been top quality work. Granted the quality of the work will depend on the individual doing it, but if they trust this outside guy and he is VW certified and uses VW parts you can probably trust him.
-
my dealer fit coilovers for me
-
did you get a price in the end?
i know of a guy who did work for dealership on alarms and his friend did leather stuff
-
Cheers guys, just wanted reassurance that it was 'normal'.
Will give 'Wayne' a ring on Tuesday and see what price he does them at.....
I believe I should be looking at around £250 for colour coded rear parking sensors?
Also, how much would cruise control set me back?? May go for it if its cheap enough.....
-
Awesome GTI are doing it for £200, can't be too far off of that.
-
Where abouts are they based??

Is that including the bumper? It sounds way to cheap, the reversing sensors are £175 from VW. Sounds like they are not using VW parts. Just a thought.
-
I thought £250 was the general price people were paying - I havent phoned to enquire myself just yet due to the Bank Holiday. I didnt think the entire rear bumper was changed - I think holes are made for the sensors to fit in to.
Maybe someone who has ad them done will clarify......
-
I was going to fit them to mine. I even bought the bumper with the holes off Ebay, before I decided not to bother.
The top section normally comes without holes drilled. The VW official PDC bumper (top section) comes with the holes cut out to fit their kit. You can see what I mean in this picture. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/rear-bumper-with-parking-sensor-vw-golf-mk5-2-0-GT-TDi_W0QQitemZ160327517264QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item160327517264&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1683|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318
There is a kit going on Ebay for £150, which is a good price compared to the garage. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Genuine-VW-Parking-Sensors-MK5-golf-Touran-Bora-Jetta_W0QQitemZ160323569477QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item160323569477&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72:1683|66:2|65:12|39:1|240:1318

Did you take your car into the dealer Pitch?
So I assume they just drill hole sinto the bumper for the sensors to fit......
-
Yep mate.
Robinsons in Lowestoft, they did the lot in a morning.
Now going to get my hands wet

Shows you how unskilled some of the mechanics are that work at some VW dealerships. That they have to outsource the fitting of extra's.
I know paint stuff is nearly always outsourced. But I never knew the fitting of extra's was done like that. Interesting reading.

I reverse into my garage, which would be much easier with parking sensors. I also reverse into my sisters driveway whenever I pop round, or have to parallel park when visiting my parents etc.
Parking sensors would make things much easier for me, although seem silly to others. I would rather spend on an accessory which will help protect my car, while making things much easier and convenient for me.
For £250 I think its well worth it for me and my needs.
-
just push the accelorator lol
Cruise control is very useful when you have average speed cameras or know a road filled with them. It avoids the temptation to floor it at every opportunity!
-
plus i have found that cruise control on the motorway gives me better mpg figures!
-
Cruise is a godsend. I use it all the time, make life so much easier when you don't want to play.
Then again, I've done 75k in 17 months,so I'm biased.

Cruise Control.....enough said. Traffic choked roads its great.
Lazy........poss, but one of those 'had it...difficult to live without' things (Sky+, sliced bread....)
Sensors............see above.
