Hi, I've been wading through the search but can't find a definitive answer to this one. :undecided:
Is it possible to get a new door/ignition key cut from the VIN code? (91H 8v 160k)
I only have one key, I presume its the original as it fits both doors & ignition and is so worn now you have to jiggle it in the ignition to get it to turn. Not worth cutting a new one off the old one as there's hardly any profile left on it.....doesn't fit in the hatch lock at all though?
Thanks, J

I think there is a code on the ignition barrel?

yep, give your dealer a call. this assumes the locks on the car are original though ;)
I took a blank key and my ign key to a locksmith and he knocked me one up in 5 minutes though

Thanks, I'll check the lock no's, no point in cutting off the existing, there's not much left of it and you have to jiggle it to get it to work the ignition . It fits both doors but won't even go in the hatch?? It seems to be a different type of key in there. :undecided:

A definitive answer to my original question which may be of interest. Guess which is the new key?

Jan 91 8v 160k- The new key was cut from the VIN records. I took a chance on it being original as the old key still fitted both doors and the ignition (with a jiggle) and I couldn't believe this key was not original given the wear. The new key just needed a squirt of WD40 and a little easing and it now works fine all round (except the hatch).
Has anyone got a key more worn than this I wonder?

The leather keyring thing looks pretty cool. Is it 'official' VW?

I don't think so, it just has a local Bath service garage no on the back, not even a VW dealer it seems.
