Title: Looked at a Golf today - Advise needed
Post by: MaBs on 10 April 2009, 20:28
Hiya, I've been to look at a P reg Mk 3 3dr Golf GTI today at a local garage.
It's a really tidy clean car with full service history however there is something that is worrying me slightly.
The window on the drivers side would only go up about half way and then powered back down, when I locked the car it closed the window, however when I unlocked the car the front and passenger side windows came back down.
I take that it isn't normal, is it an easy fix, what could it be?

HI,
Welcome to the forum.
I think you'll find that on mk3 you can close the windows by turn the key in the lock which will close and open windows. I know if I leave my MK3 window open I can close it by turn the key in the drivers door and it will lock it....I hope that makes sense......

If you need regulators then they costs around 30 -40 pounds normally.

Thanks,
Mark

Sorry I don't think I've quite explained properly. The problem is when I unlockded the car both the windows came down?

I would think that the control unit for the windows is faulty.

Thank you for the replies!

A friend seems to think that this is linked to the alarm system and that this may need taking to a main dealer to be fixed if it is the alarm thats damaged, I know its impossible to say but does this sound very likely or is it a common problem with the control unit?

Could be the alarm system but if you hold the key in the unlocked position for too long it will activate the total closure system and lower the windows for you.  Where you doing that??

Surley if it's at a garage though they would fix it for you before you collected it

Mine does this sometimes randomly. If it is the same as mine to get them back up repeatedly tap the switch so it goes up.

I carnt see it being the alarm. The signal to open/close windows wouldnt go to the alarm would it? its not that clever. When you turn the key one way, or the other, it sends a signal to the window motor to open/close the window (depending whitch way it was turned) after an amount of time. Most probable electrical/motor fault?? (Almost 99% sure it doesnt go to the alarm control)

Could easily be the alarm, most mk3 gti's will have some sort of aftermarket cat 1 system fitted that will be linked to the total closure system.

Mine did when I got it, the alarm was knackered and didn't work and it was also playing silly buggers with the total closure.
