Title: starting to think I have purchased a lemon
Post by: Daston on 08 April 2009, 22:42
Fixed the leak from the powersteering bottle tonight and fired her up to make sure all was ok. Distinct tapping sound from top end. Looked at dip stick and the damn thing was showing just below the low marking. Looked under car and nice puddle of oil! Looks like its seeping from the sump and oil filter. The guy must have known about this and cleaned the bottem of the engine prior to me viewing or it must have gone on my way home :( Topped the oil up and off to get a tyre changed tomorrow and then off to visten my mechanic just hope its a gasket and nothing too serious.

Where are you?  There's a load of things that could be leaking.

If its coming from the oil filter - just make sure its actually tight (you might be that lucky).

As DH says, clean it all up, get the engine running, then get under it.

If its on the oil filter and no higher on the block, its probably the oil cooler - be it loose from the block or damaged.

If the oil is higher up on the block - then its probably the rocker cover, but I wouldn't have thought enough could leak out from there, all the way down the block to form a puddle on the ground, without building up somewhere else first.

If its leaking at the sump, the sump gasket takes about 30 mins to change and will set you back £8, get the MK3 rubber/metal one. It could be the old owner has done an oil change and not replaced the crush washer and its leaking from there - 20p for a new one.

If it was a puddle - I wouldn't drive the car until its sorted.

clean all the sump off again and fire it up (with topped up oil obviously)  both my 1.8 8v and 1.8 16v had a small pinhole on sump which only leaked when car was hot. took me a while to trace em!

Thanks for the link just what I was looking for! For the price might as well get a new sump pan and gasket! At least that will rule out those as a problem.

Plus you havent seen the eye watering cost of TVR parts. My new brass sump plug cost me £35! So 60p is very nice lol.

Left a tray under the engine bay to collect the oil and it dosnt look like a lot. However it certainly looks like it is weeping from the sump gasket.

Got her up on axle stands and gave the whole engine a good blast of gunk. As soon as turned the engine on oil started to seep out the top of the oil cooler and within seconds a small pudle had formed on the bottom of the engine block. So going to strip all that down. Am I right in thinking there is an o-ring where the cooler fits on to the mounting bracket?

Also on another note how in gods name do you get the front splitter off? Those plastic clips are solid!

oil cooler,

yes you undone the filter to reveal an big nut ( 24 or 27 mm i thinkk, then as you drop the cooler theres a gasket between the cooler and the mounting face

thats where my progressive oil change system was

if i was changing the sump gasket id get a new sump for £30. my old driver used to tap like mad from cold. rev'd it hard and it was ok for a while. the Hydraulic tappets were at fault, either get a new set or get some wynnes hydraulic tappet fluid oil addative depending how bad the noise is.

i put enough wynns hydraulic tappet fluid into my old 1992 bmw 325 worked a treat, and definatly cheaper than 24 tappets. i put enough additive for 12L of engine oil about twice the reccomended amount, purred like a kitten after that lol  :lipsrsealed:

I wish i had that many offers of help when my 8v fecks up! All my new civic driving mates disappear into the woodwork!!!

Back to the topic though... those paper/ card gaskets are choss... mine still leaks a bit. And my old sump rusted through and ended up with a pin hole in it.

hope you get it sorted ok... then on to the next thing that stuffs up!
