Hey all. I need to know if doing constant motorway journeys in my GTi 8v will end up wrecking it. It's done 135,000 miles already, good condition through out but if it'll be killed by sitting for 5+ a week on motorways then I'll sell it. Let me know. Cheers.
-
nah mins on 194k and i do around 280 miles a week on the motor way
-
It's made in Germany.
They have the odd motorway, some of them are quite fast.
It is very likely that the age of the components on your car will kill it, not motorway driving. Motorways *will* accelerate bearing wear though. Engines in good condition *should* be OK with it.
-
my daily has 246k on the clock and has no problems with motorways. except the exhaust noise gives me a head ache :embarassed:
-
motorways are better than own driving. On a motorway you sit at 3000rpm which is optimum rpm for oil pressure and lubrication and engine temp is pretty constant. around town you are constantly stop and go, temp gets high while sitting in traffic, and when idleing the oil pressure is low.
Thats what I heard from someone in the know anyway :lipsrsealed:

Hmm, that's cool. I've been tempted to replace my mark II with a mark IV 1.8 T instead, making sure it's a later model so the ignition problem has been sorted. That, or the V5 model.

surely the V5 is no quicker thant the 1.8T but would drink more fuel and cost more on tax as higher CO2 emissions?
-
There's not a lot in it, checked out the details on Parker's review website and they're very much the same. Depends on insurance mainly, if it's a lot cheaper to insure a V5 then I'll go that way, but if it's only £100 more or something for the 1.8T then I'll go that way. I would prefer the turbo just for the fun of the ride.

In theory mile for mile motorway driving is doing less damage to your car than any other, less year on many components comppred to country lane/town driving, due to there being less stress on many parts of the car.
-
Mines got over 150k and I regularly cruise at 90. If well maintained these things eat miles.
-
country lanes and b roads kill cars, as your asking everything to work harder, bimbeling allong at 80 the engine isnt working that hard or anything to do that much really. only thing motorway kill is 5th gear if you have a leacky gearbox with bugger all oil in it
-
Agree with Danny P. Country roads kill cars. Ive had more problems with mine with country lanes.
Just remember...
VW's are not reliable.

Repent sinner !

I do 300 motorway miles every week no fail for the last year and a half in the valver and apart from the usual problems with the mk2 nothing serious has ever gone wrong!
Every monday im back on the road, cruise at 80-90 and do the "occasional" 100+
Cars are to be driven, if you want a show car thats a diff story right?

That's a good point there, well said.

Meh, I've got 170 odd k and no problems with motorways, he is quite happy to plod along.
I would make sure you check your oil levels very regularly though, mine seems to use it a bit when maintaining higher revs.
-
Same as any car though, always check everything every week. Mine need the valve stem seals replacing as it burns a little oil from time to time, although less since i did an oil change...
-
250 a week, every week.
Motorway driving is the least damaging form of motoring your car can do.

No, that would be motoring on the back of an AA truck.

just bought a mk2 gti £250 with 197,000 on the clock original engine and box and it pulls well, mots show its been doing 30,000 a year for the last 3 yrs. i'll run it to 200k then abf it
-
have done 960miles in 13 days.
2 weeks before that count i did 500miles in 3 days
bewteen the above 2 i expect i did a fair amount to.

I'm amazed, impressed, and very happy to read some of the high mileages that some of your older GTI Dubs have done - :afro:  :afro:
My Mk5 has done 64,000 and I intend keeping her. And yes, she is very regularly maintained.
-
mines done 204k but engine was swapped at 194k as the guy who had the car before me thrashed it and big end bearing was going.
gearbox had done 203k before swapping.
never had a problem other than the usual, so you should be fine doing motorway miles
