Put together this little write up for using a pair of boot struts from a MK3 Golf as bonnet lifters. Costs the price you pay for the struts from a scrappy but that should be anything between £4 - £10. I paid £5 :P
You'll need a 13mm spanner, to undo the bolts on a scrap Golf. You can make it easier for yourself if you take a flatheaded screwdriver to pry the back metal casing that holds the strut in place on the bolt. You'll see what I mean when you look at one. Obviously take the struts off, keep the bolts and washers for them too.
Now locate the following places on your Golf:
One next to the washer bottle:
One next to the air filter:
For these two above, you'll need 2 nuts for which will fit onto the bolts from the boot struts, and place them under the small gaps (you'll see what I mean when you're there). Screw the bolts in on both locations. Also to note, you'll have to pull off on either side a spongy type piece of material, easy to do, just pull it and it'll reveal the hole you need to use for the strut bolt.
One on the bonnet nearer the back:

The other is in the same location just on the other side :)
The last two you'll need to remove the bolts and replace with the ones from the boot struts. Also to note that you'll want to cover up the area with paint or something to stop it from rusting as it's bare metal under the original bolt.
You'll end up with this:

Oh and you'll find that if you look at where the boot bolts need to go, you'll have some sponge type material that helps soften where the bonnet goes down, they have a groove in them which conviently looks like the boot struts were meant to go on the bonnet in the first place :P

that look sick will do it today , are the holes already in place or do you have to drill your own for where you bolt the boot strut on?

The holes you use are already there, there are two spongy type pieces of sponge (lol) that you pull out from the side wings (under the bonnet) and you use those holes, and the two holes on the bonnet are the ones that have a bolt in already, it's the one that's second in, be sure to look at the picture and compare it to your bonnet :)

Thanks Shady! You have inspired me to do this!

Thanks Shady! You have inspired me to do this!
No probs man, I can't really take credit for doing it though, I did it because VRDan did it, but thought I'd make the write up as Dan didn't get round to doing one. Does look sweet though :)
-
done it and it is proper sweet, id love to see if anyone has made there bonnet open sideways!? do you think this can be done?

Why don't you try?   The bonnet is hinged to go towards the windscreen I'm sure and that's the other thing that supports the way it's lifted. I'm sure a sideways bonnet would require a lot of work glad you got it done. Got any pics?

thanx for the photo's Shady-wicked.gonna go 2 the breakers 2morrow for a new rooflining, might aswell get this done 2
-
found this link got parts from scrapy at cost of 4.80 ten min job now sorted thanks for putting together this thread top marks for being spot on.
-
Great mod. I did this to mine over the weekend. Looks the nuts.
-
Will the struts hold the bonnet up steady though.... I'm guessing its just to make it look good and if work under the bonnet is needed then the main bonnet lifter will be needed for safety?? correct??

Nope, just the bonnet litters will be enough. You have to push down on them quite hard to close in the first place. :)

cheers shady.
I'll be gettin some then
But if i bash my head on the bonnet i'm coming round yours :afro:

Go to a scrappy and get the bolts from the boot struts there? Thing is this isn't a normal mod to do, so people selling the boot struts are selling them for replacement boot strut use, not for use with a bonnet. In which case they expect you to use your old bolts.
-
haha yeah i thought of that after :\
damn ittttt, nearest scrappy is so far from me tho, :( are they some kind of special bolts?

You actually bought a kit made for the purpose, I think Mazza bought standard boot struts from a MK3, which do the same job but aren't made for the purpose.
-
ahhh, i'm with you! :embarassed:
-
yehh thats right, damn mann, i wish i didnt rush into things like that hha!
how much did you pay for your kit? inc ptage etc? cheers

I don't know about you but I prefer the black boot strut ones as opposed to the silver ones. Keeps it looking original then. Why don't you have a look in the Classified section and then go to Breaking For Spares. I'm sure someone will send you the 4 bolts and nuts you need for pennies :)
-
yeh i know what you mean bout the black, chrome isnt for me, too blingy haha, but yeh good idea, cheers dude :)

Think it was about £15. inc delivery, I would have just gone one from a scrappy but theres only 1 near me and it doesn't have any Golfs in

i will do this to mine, cheers :)

Fitted today! Looks sweet but I think I will try and get some newer struts as I have to lift to 45 degrees before it starts to lift on it's own. So glad I have done this now wanted to do it for a while but never found a free way to do it!! Cheers guys

This is strange, im trying to do this mod and on the point where you remove the bung to fit it, the gap is massive. There is no way of getting anut behind either. Anyone got any ideas?
Pic coming....
Cheers
-
When you remove the bung, your'e looking at an oblong type cutout? Just hold your nut in an open ended spanner while you screw the ball end bolt into it, it will catch and pull the nut up.
If you're looking at something else - it's the wrong bit
-
I found this link http://www.gti-vr6.net/library/body_exterior/inst_Pep_Boys_hood_struts/frames.html (http://www.gti-vr6.net/library/body_exterior/inst_Pep_Boys_hood_struts/frames.html) and it shows a different location to what some of you guys have used, would this matter?
-
No dont think it matters - i think i used the same hole
-
"you'll see what I mean when you're there"
That phrase brings back some fond memories of my first girlfriend.
She had that written in big letters on her headboard.
Aah bless
-
Blatantly doing this as soon as I can!
-
Went to Milber Salvage & Spares today and bought some tailgate lifters to do this mod
I'm super happy with the outcome! For anyone who is interested though, Polo 6N Tailgate lifters don't work because they are to short. However I managed to find a set from a Seat Ibiza that worked a treat! I had to use a combination of both the cars fitting nuts though.
-
would u use the same bolt holes on the wing and bonneton any bonnet stuts as some say u not.
-
the bolt holes tht iv bin told 2 use on the wings aint the bolt holes there r holes in the wing but not underneath

Use that hole in the wing and slip a nut in behind to hold the strut fixing bolt ;)
-
so doing this soon :) will post pics

quick word of advice though if you get the parts from a scrappy nick the nuts holding the front wipers on they a perfect fit :)
-
Just done this. works perfect but will be needing some large washers to make it perfect
-
nice little mod this will be doing this shortly

Mines now fitted today

Hello guys.
Sorry to bring up a dead thread.
Just been to the scrap yard and taken some struts off of a mk3 and they seam to be a bit long. I've looked at loads of pictures of fitted ones and I'm using the same bolt holes.
Anyone got a length of the ones they have used?
Thanks
