Strange!

So you have no idea why that broke? no big lumps of metal lying in sump?
Does the engine turn? (hand cranking)

I think I would like to find out what caused this!

if its a 1y, aaz or 1z engine the baffle costs 4.64 from VW '055 115 221B'

The baffle is to stop oil from sloshing about and the pump running dry.

It's held on by 4 little clips around the pickup, they are easy to break when removing - maybe someone has had the pump off before and broke a couple and weakened it, then some stripped driving has just broke it loose altogether.

Personally, I'd fit a new one, or a nice Shrick baffled sump

Is your sump seal new? Worth throwing a new one on it whilst you're at it, GSF do the metal/rubber hybrid for about £9.
